What rotary do you recommend?

I got the Makita with the side handle, but 99% of the time I use it without any second handle at all. I find it light and pretty easy to control. I don't find the weird speed dial (sorta meaningless numbers, not rpms) to be a big problem as you quickly learn what range to work within. I know pros who've used Makitas every day for many years with no trouble. I can see why people buy Dewalts, Milwaukees (used one back in the day, a bit heavy), and especially Metabos, but I've had lousy luck with Hitachi power tools and with the repairs my PC 7336 has required I decided not to consider the PC brand rotary.

Metabo is an excellant tool. I would choose it over the DeWalt if I had to make that choice..... BUT ..... since I don't have to make that choice I have both :grinno:

I like the De Walt but it is considered heavy compared the others on the list with exception of the Milwaukee. I like its smooth feel while in motion and love the speed dial with the RPMs listed right on it.

I'm with BillD.

I've had my Dewalt 849 for over 3 years now and it's never given me a bit of trouble.

There are local Dewalt sales and service stores all around the country (there's one here in Rochester) which means I can get it fixed in a jiffy if needed.

The PC 7428 isn't made by PC. It's made in Germany by FLEX (which was bought by PC as a subsidiary). Something to consider anyway.

Speaking of German tools, I vote for the Metabo or Fein. They're really sweet.
