What Makes It A "detail"

There are more than little things that set apart a wash and a detail...what are you getting at? Do you have competition that does "detailing" that is what you consider merely a wash?

YES PRETTY MUCH TRYING TO SELL MY SERVICE TO PEOPLE I HAVE NEVER MET..AND

I KNOW MOST COMPANIES AROUND HERE SAY THEY ARE DETAILERS, WHEN I TALK

TO THE CUSTOMERS THEY TELL ME THEIR GUY Charges 20.00 bucks inside and out on a "detail" i respond by saying does he empty out your change holder because a detail should not cost 20 bucks..i sometimes tell them to keep their car wash guy and have me "detail" it once a month and it sometimes works..the best part is that i make probably more than the car wash guy in one detail than he does all month..but basically i was looking for another conversation piece i could use to entice new customers away from the car wash guy who says he is a detailer..

sorry about the caps

Pressure didnt you just say in a relatively recent thread that your competitors charge something like 65 or 75 bucks for just a wash wax and vac. I remember because you were posted looking for help on trying to justify your cost or explain your "better" product use to customers. I am confused.

(chill with caps lock, its hard on some of the eyes:cooleek:)

Are you yelling and then whispering halfway through the paragraph?

$20 bucks is a wash and vac it sounds like, a detail is...well....a detail.

Honestly I understand what you're asking, but the problem isn't your pitch, it's your target. You don't want the people that you have to pry their wallets out. What you should do is target people that at least know what a 'detail' is and will appreciate the extra attention. If you have to show them pictures and hold their hand through the process, it ain't worth it. Target a different demographic is what I'd suggest.

Why would a detailer [need to] ask what the difference is?

I think the difference is in the attention to detail !

Having said that there are a lot of "detail shops" around here that are in fact glorified car wash places charging around $65-$85... which is for an exterior wash 'n wax, interior wipe, vacuum & shampoo. They've been in business for some time and people that go there sing their praises. They are especially busy in spring!

If you understand real detailing, you're not as impressed.

A detail is everthing done to clean totally, short of taking apart and restoring. That includes inside, outside, motor, door jams, trunk, and wheel wells. Anything less is just a wash and wax.

Seems to me this definition falls short since I think a full detail would go beyond cleaning to include polish and 'wax' (LSP).

When I said "outside"I ment cleaning, claying, polishing, and waxing or useing a sealant and chrome and trim.

I agree with you on this one. Focus on the people that love their vehicles and they will appreciate the difference. Those who look at a vehicle as only a means to get from point A to point B generally don't care as much.

A wash is a basic/blanket service to remove dirt, grease, grime and soot leaving the car with clean unsoiled surfaces. This can be done to any and all vehicles.

A detail is anything beyond that, which takes into consideration that individual vehicles needs.

Examples:

Do the seats need shampoo or a leather treatment?

Does the carpet need to be spotted, dyed, or shampoo?

Does the exterior need clay, hand, DA polish, or rotary polish?

What products best suit the needs of this vehicle?

A detail can be anything from a small $20 "mini" or "spot" detail service to a complete/full detail for hundreds of dollar.

My personal opinion lol for what its worth:

A wash and wax is not a detail service if the wax that is applied to every vehicle without consideration of that vehicles current condition.

A wash and wax is a detail (a small detail but still a detail)if the condition on the vehicle and previous products used are takin into consideration.

There is no “official definition of the term detail. Anybody can use it any way they want and they won’t get arrested by the polish police.

The important thing is to educate your customers and potential customers about what’s included in your details so they’ll understand why they’d want yours more than the other guys’.

It’s most important for them to understand that your details include your skill, knowledge, dedication and care. Those are things they won’t find at the low-ball shops.

PC.

A detailer is a service title, we do everything. It's not a judge of an amount of work, it's a skillset.

Technically a detail could be washing someones car, but it sure as hell better not be sold as a "complete detail" terms can be deceiving.

This guy sounds like Benz Rider, I wonder if any of these guys are actually that notorious user...
