What it's like to be a newbie

Detailing NY

New member
Well I have to say, I am not a newbie to detailing, but I am a newbie to my new hobbie which is keeping a fish tank.

It is not as easy as you think. you dont just through water in a tank and put the fish in.

I have tons of questions that needed to be answered, when someone on autopia gave me a fish forum to get my questions answered. I am asking everything from water questions to fish questions and the help I am getting is great, making my life a lot easier.

Now back to autopia, if your new here, ask away! your questions will get answered. You may not understand how we answer them at first, but you will catch on. I now know what it's like to be a newbie on another forum.

You get that wierd feeling like you dont want to screw up the paint (or kill the fish :) ) Thats were the forum comes in, ask before you try it and we can walk you through it.

Don't be shy, ask away!

It really does help!! And its also great having friendly people who will answer you questions over and over, and not just say use the search button(which I am jsut now learning;) ) This place is great, I have learned so much in so little time, and it also helped me a lot on selecting what products to buy.

BTW, if you want, I might could help on some of the fish questions, me and my dad have 4 55 gallon tanks:up

I am waiting another week to add the algae eaters, they tank is only 2 weeks old. any other ideas, send me an email. or my AIM is

pronydetailer, thanks

Flushing a fish down the toilet is a lot easier than flushing a car.

My rule of thumb on any forum, be nice to newbs, we were all there once. I'm still there where here is.

Were was the intraweb when I had fish....oh yeah, that was 25 years ago, only the military and geeks had it then. :lol

I cant help you there. Ive never put fish in a tank with water. It must be a northern thing. Down here, we just use a pan with with cooking oil....

:LOLOL

Hi Brian, good luck with the tank. How about adding a Redtail shark, some Black Molly's and some varitail guppies. I really liked the sharks when I had my tanks. All of the above are live bearers so you will need to get a small breader tank. Great hobby, have fun with it.

I had tiger barbs & a tri-color shark, but they did not get along, so i split them up and gave the barbs away. Then i added all the fish above, but the shark did not get along with them.

I dont plan on breading any fish. THEY better not lay an eggs or crap like that. How do i know if they did.

LOL

Brian, you have both live breaders and egg alyers in your tank. With both the female will get fat around the mid-section (sounds familiar). With the live breader you will actually see the babies coming out. since most of the fish you have are omnivores they will eat the babies if you don't get them out of the tank quickly. The gourami are nesters, the male will make a bubble nest at the top of your tank and place the eggs there, they also become very protective. Most of the live breader will eat their young too. It's been a few years since I've been involve with this but I don't believe it's changed much since I had my tanks. Once again good luck!

Dude, you rock! Aquariums are GREAT.

I used to keep one up until a few years ago.. long sad tragic story. Anyway, one book that I found myself checking out of the library over and over again was Joseph Levine's The Complete Fishkeeper. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...f=sr_1_1/103-1844952-6927807?v=glance&s=books) The author has a great sense of humor and guides you through setting up, troubleshooting, and gives suggestions on what sorts of communities work best (like which fish are happiest in groups rather than singles). Also a good introduction to marine aquariums if you're interested in eventually going that route.

As for the support here for newbies, it's great.. I've learned SO much here. I'm starting to get back into detailing and I'm trying to figure out the new products released since my last buying spree... SO many!

NYD: Better go and practice saluting infront of your toilet, because you'll be doing that a lot! :lol

Oh, and when the eggs turn moldy, they didn't hatch... :(

- FORMER fish tank owner. :p

I better not go near that toilet. some of these fish are getting big and my clog it. LOL!

i will throw them my friends car, like in grumpy old men
