What is your hand position while driving?

On busy stop and go roads, I usually rest my left elbow on the door arm rest and hold the wheel with that hand at the 9 o-clock position, while the other hand stays on the shifter.



During highway driving, I find myself resting both elbows on the arm rests and holding the wheel on the bottom portion at 4 o-clock and 8 o-clock positions.........



How about u?
 
I usually have my left hand at 9 and my right on the shifter. Anytime I'm driving more than 45 or 50 mph I like to have my hands at 10 and 2. Its just safer I think.

:shocked not a mental picture I wanted..... don't like thinking about cars with dual stick shifts :p
 
I was taught to use the 10 & 2 o'clock positon. That's what I use, unless my arms get tired, then I switch to 9 & 3.
 
Most of the time...left hand at 12, right hand on the shifter.

When it's raining/snowing/icy/etc... i try to keep my hands at 10 and 2 most of the time.
 
i heard that its kinda dangerous to hold the wheel at the 12 o'clock position because if you get hit, and the airbag deploys, it might actually hit your arm with enough force to break it.



of course, thats only what i've heard, dont know if theres any truth to it :confused:

I just went to a safe driving course here at work; we have to go to one every 5 years. The instructor was a retired California Highway Patrol officer. He recommended the 4 and 8 o'clock positions because of injuries from air bags. So.... that's what I've heard too. :cool:
 
Normal driving: 3 and 9 o'clock.



Traffic driving: 10 o'clock and right hand on shifter.



"Looking for a parking spot" driving: left hand at 12 o'clock and doing the window washing motion to turn. :D

I've been following Autopia for a while (gonna buy the e-book tomorrow), and I gotta say, this is the most mature and friendly board I've ever been on. Amazing amount of information too, not to mention the coolest of cars. (I feel small with my lil' Civic! :D )

Depends. If it's just light and easy cruising, then it's right hand @ 6.



If it's any time that will or might require quick moves or when I'm "Making Time" (who else read that article in Motor Trend?) by averaging around 80 mph or so, then it's 9 and 3 all the way.
 
I slip between 10 and 2 ......and...... 3 and 9 most of the time.



And one of my pet peeves is when people use the "underhand grab" of their hand on the steering wheel to make a turn around a corner. Oh I hate that!
 
3 and 9 o'clock....or a little above is proper.

Thats the way the teach it at the BMW driving school.

The same goes for track driving.



If anything happens fast while in traffic, that is where you want your hands to be.....

I'll do that sometimes myself.............I'll admit it.........But dont tell my kids.

9 and 3. Keeps hands relaxed and is easier to change direction in an emergency



10 to 2 strains your arms but is still ok

That's what I was tought at driving school as well, 3 and 9 and try and keep your hands close to there when turning as well using the shuffle method (at least that's what I remember it being called)
