What is this?

My neighbor in my parking garage noted I take crazy good care of my car's finish and asked me to take a look at some damage he has on his 1984 Mercedes.

The affected areas sat under a leaking drain pipe for weeks, if not months on end. I washed the area's with ONR and then clayed, tried 50/50 vinegar and water as well.

I'm thinking this is extreme water etching and wanted to check with the experts before I advise him.

How you approach this?

Thanks in advance.

And ignore the swirls, he's not looking for a detail, just a fix of the damage :doh.

^^^^ ....I had water leak from a crack in the ceiling while my car was left in a parking garage overnight. It left extremely hard deposits on the paint in a similar pattern in your picture (on the rear quarter panel down the side of the car). It actually etched the paint and required some relatively aggressive buffing to remove. You can still see a couple of vary faint traces under certain light at just the right angle. ....I would hate to see what might have happened if it were left unchecked any longer. Whatever leeched out of the concrete that night was bad juju.

That looks EXACTLY like the etchings left on my car from the run off water from the garage where I work. I actually had better luck rubbing it out with my finger tips then washed, clayed, and polished. Not sure what made me use my fingers but I just started rubbing it and it came off. Try not to rub too hard if you do it because I did get a blister lol.
