What is this paint defect called?

I believe it is clear coat failure, but if I can safely buff it out I will try.

It looks like crazing of the clear coat. Has the car been repainted? If it has it would indicate a bad mix of the paint with too much solvent.

It can be called cracking, checking, crazing, alligatoring or crowsfeet.

Like BigJimZ28 and lecchilo said, it’s probably due to a bird bomb.

Whatever you want to call it you’re stuck with it. It won’t buff out because it’s too deep in the film. You’ll have to either live with it or sand it down and re-paint.

pc.

That will definetely not buff out. I've been painting for quite awhile and seen that stuff before. Looks like laquer crack to me.

How old is that paint and do you know if it's single stage or base coat/clear coat. That should help.

Just by looking at the picture you will not get that out.

Four to five year old paint, the previous owner was an idiot. *Sigh*

Electric lime green pearl coat, at least a two stage base coat/clear coat paint.

I believe my plan may be to buy the heat reduction hood available for Wranglers and get a fresh repaint.

I believe will be definitely getting the better hood and having it painted then. Lots of little chips all over the hood and the hinges are chipping. I know I got myself into a lot buying this Jeep, but there was no way I was leaving the lot with out it! I have another small spot like on the hood else where, but I believe it is on the fender that needs straightened and repainted any way.

Taken yesterday, new tires are on order and waiting to get the flares painted.
