What is this all about?

Why do some glazes recommend application back and forth on top surfaces and up and down on vertical surfaces? Would it make a difference to go back and forth on vertical surfaces also?

IMO because they think it makes them sound special.

I can't imagine why it would and I've never seen any evidence that it matters.

And I can be pretty discerning about my inspections ;)

Some say that applying and removing wax on vertical and horizontal surfaces in different directions create a brighter, more substantial "pop", at a distance. Personally, I don't believe it but there are some very good, high end detailers that stand by that philosophy.

I'm still waiting for somebody credible to offer a logical, let alone objectively verified, explanation of why that'd be true. People, including some very talented people, say all sorts of [stuff] for all sorts of reasons, but that doesn't mean it's true ;)

I believe the reasoning behind this is that any marring that you might induce while wiping in a vertical pattern on a vertical panel will be less likely to catch the sunlight than horizontal marring on a vertical panel. The same on a horizontal panel. The marring you see on the hood/roof/trunk the most are the lines that run from side-to-side. So if you wipe in a front-to-back motion on those panels the marring you induce is less noticeable.

Its just a method to help keep you from inducing noticeable marring. Same type of goal as washing w/ 2 bucket method or doing a presoak with a foam gun.
