What is 'marring'?

I keep hearing this term..I'm guessing it's a bad film probably of old wax build up?.
What exactly does it mean.... :dunno

marring is usually associated with swirl marks, spiderwebbing, basicaly blemishes/scratches on the paint from washing/drying cars, or using somehting like the scrub brush at a DIY carwash.
