What does everyone think about Meguiars products?

Hi,
I have been reading some great advice on this forum, and have learned about many products that I never knew existed. I am excited to try them out. However, I have a slew of products that I've purchased over the years made by Meguiars. Well, I've noticed that they don't get much mention on these forums, and was wondering if they are perceived as 'lower quality products' by all of you pros.

Thanks for your comments.

Erick

Oh no, Meguiar's products are not lower quality by any means! They do have lower priced products in their lineup, but they have matching higher quality/priced products as well. They try to fill lots of different niches.

If you like their products, stick with em. If you don't like em, try out some other brands. Even if you do like em, it's fun to try things out just for the sake of trying them out ;)

well, therees the commercial products, and the professional products...... the commercial ones we probably dont talk abou/want, but the professional line is very good products. however, like bigron, im not a big fan of their clay. mother's clay is much better, and can be purchased locally.

I agree about the clay...although they are supposed to have made changes, but the other stuff (mainly the PRO line) is about all I use. It's available locally and it's relatively inexpensive.

I like Meg's #9, #7 and the Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner if the wheels haven't been neglected for months. Meg's has another glaze I want to try out. I think it's #81 but I'll have to check into that. Meg's Final Touch I've read is an excellent QD although I haven't tried it yet.

Here's my opinion. I have used megs products and continue to do so. However, there is so much other stuff out there besides just meg products. Also, I feel that megs makes too many consumer products that confuse the consumer. What's the point of making 6 car wash soaps or numerous tire dressing products? Why not keep it simple and make just a few products.

Hi Erick,

There are just over 1000 threads here at Detail City where Meguiars is mentioned at least once.

They make ALOT of products, some of them are great products too.

Megs has a comprehensive distribution system, i.e., you can buy their products off the shelf in a lot of places, including WalMart. I don't think that anyone here has ever 'slammed' the products, if they have, apologies to Meguires.

I use DACP a lot. It's relatively inexpensive and comes in nice big 1 litre bottles. It is quite 'dusty' tho.

I understand that they also manufacture 'NuFinish', which is very popular amongst the DC fraternity. Just ask 'BigRon', he swears by the stuff. LOL

I personnally like the pro line. I've got #'s 84, 83,82, 9, 7,26,38, 39, 40,and 6. I also like the proline all metal polish but their consumer line isnt that great to me though. I do like the GC car wash and NXT was. Final Detail in the Detailer Line is excellent also. The pads are just as good as any other to me. The only things I really don't care about products are there waxes/sealants (26, GC wax and regular wax) , but therefore I haven't tried the all. There finishing sand papers are excellent also.

My take on Meg's products...

Their products are good. They completely cover the full spectrum of car care essentials, can be found just about anywhere (even some supermarkets), and are one of the best branded products out there. I can't think of anyone who hasn't heard of Meguiar's. For me though, I know of too many products that perform just as well if not better for less money. And as a professional, my bottom line is my most valued commodity.

Thanks everyone for the clarificaiton.

I'm a little confused about what Meguiars consumer line of products is, and what their professional line of products is...

I've tried some of their cheaper stuff (ie. Paint Cleaner, Polish), which I wasn't too impressed with.

I have since began using their line of products identified with the #'s..... but I've seen on the internet that they also have a line of products (ie Machine polish) that I've never seen in stores before. They look like they are aimed at professionals, and not regular consumers.

Which one of these products are considered their "professional" line?

Thanks.

Erick

P.S.

This is a GREAT forum. I visit many car related forums, and this one has some of the most eager help I have every come across. Keep up the great work and THANK YOU.

Erick

Erick, Meguiar's professional line will be in tan bottles which say the number of the product. It will also say mirror glaze on the bottle. For example: #9 swirl remover 2.0, #7 show car glaze, etc.............

Erick,

Meguiar's makes a lot of great products, especially in their professional line. I've used them for many years, and at one time when I was in the detailing biz, they were the products that we went to most often.

Even their consumer line is very good, especially with the development of the NXT products.

Most paint & body supply stores will carry a good quantity of Megs pro line stuff. Summit Racing is close to me, so I can get just about anything I want there. Even their consumer line "purple bottle" cleaner/wax is some really good stuff. It's about as easy to use as it gets and leaves excellent results, especially for the price.

The Deep Crystal System ( Step #1 Paint Cleaner and the Step #2 Polish ) can be a bit confusing/semi difficult for a complete novice, but once you understand HOW to use it, and what to expect, they too give great results

"Lower quality"? No way. Megs have been in biz a long long time and it ain't by accident. I'm not all that thrilled with their maroon bottle "consumer" line stuff but their cream colored bottle, Body Shop Professional Series and their Detailer Line has proven to be top notch. The differences between the Meg's stuff and the smaller company stuff you read about here is ease of use, tolerance to be able to use in direct sunlight and having direct access to the people who make and distribute the stuff for advice. At one point in my life I used nothing but Meg's products and could have gone on that way the rest of my days and been very happy with the results.

Nobody here (at least I don't think) is down on Meg's. If someone is then they simply don't know what they are doing. Again, the differences are in the minor details. Take someone who knows what they are doing and give them nothing but Wal-Mart off the shelf products vs. someone who is clueless with all the most expensive products in the world and the person with Wal-Mart stuff will kick arse every time.

Meg's make some outstanding products. They also make some so-so or even not so great products.

Meg's clay is now made by AutoMagic, the same people who make Clay Magic. It is equal to any other clay in quality now (the old clay was a waste).

ANY Meguiar's product will give excellent results when used according to the instructions. Even the maroon bottles will do exactly what they say they will do. What often happens is that the consumer products are applied in situations where they are not the appropriate product. Also, specifically with the paint cleaners and abrasives, many consumers come to those products from TW rubbing compound and polishing compound, which do not break down. The Meg's stuff contain diminishing abrasives, and work by volume rather than time; to do more work with TW rubbing compound, you work longer, but with a diminishing abrasive product, you must add more product. New users of these products have to learn that.

Also, there are differences in application technique among products, and also among consumers. What I find is that consumers will gravitate toward the product that most fits the way they would work without instruction; if it is more natural for you to do the whole car and wait for it to haze, then remove the product from the car, you will prefer Meguiar's #7 and #16. If you like to wipe on, wipe off, you will prefer GEPC and S100.

I read a new sig today, from NY Detailer: "Detailing products are only as good as the person using them." Words of wisdom, those are. I'll add, with experience, a person will learn to apply the proper product to the job at hand, and will learn which products complement his personal style. That's how you get the best results.

I have yet to be disappointed by a Meg's product I have tried, but I stick to mainly the professional line. I have also not tried the clay.

This weekend I used Meg's ScratchX and ColorX after reading Groebuck's review of these two products. I was very impressed. The ColorX especially was easy to use and produced great results for an inexpensive product. Easy to find too.
