What do you use to melt ice/snow?

What do you use to melt ice/snow on the driveway and decks? I was told to stay away from certain things because they can damage the surface.

Believe it or not, cat litter works very good, and it doesn't cost much.

As far as animals i would be careful with anything like this. It works pretty fast so i would sweep it up as soon as it melts the ice.
