What do you use to clean tires and wheel wells?

Hi everyone. I have a bit of a dilemna. With winter coming up fast, I want as much protection from wax (that I have available) against road salt and all those horrible things, since the Explorer wont get washed as much during that time as in the warmer and dryer months.

Should I strip all the wax and polish that is applied currently, strip it ALL off, and reapply wax and polish? I have NuFinish polish for a base, with Meguiars Gold Class paste over it now. I want a good shine, but I still want good protection from the elements. Should I put on a coat or so of the Meguiars and go over it with NF for the protection, or does going in that order cancel the shine from teh Meguiars out? Does anyone understand what I mean? And does putting the Meg. on over the NF break down the NF so it wont last as long?

I'm just confused and not sure what to do. For winter prep and other things that I can use that I have right now, check out www.geocities.com/grant_wendel/detail.html .

Thanks for all the help everyone, this place has been a lifesaver for me :)

hey (((BUMP))) you have my favorite stuff on your list ;) made my day thanks :)

I would go for the NuFinish first (cause it's the polymer) and then the wax (if that). I know that MGP has some pretty high solvents in it, so you would need to experiment to if it does not interact well with the NuFinish. To be on the safe side you could wait a week before applying your wax.. You've used the combo before how does it hold up normally? If it's been holding up then you should be okay through the winter. Or you can just paste wax the hood, roof, trunk, and upper panels only. HTH-Steve

Steve,

I have the Meguiars on now, and I suppose everything is holding up good, the water beads like crazy, if it rains theres not as many waterspots, and dust wipes off easier. I was thinking apply more NF to the running boards, rocker panels, and bumpers.

BTW, does Meguiars cleaner wax strip off pre-existing wax on the paint?

Thanks!

Gimp,

I live by a gravel road, and we used to have a furnace in the shop where I park it, and we took out the furnace and there is still a hole in the roof where the chimney went out, havent ever gotten aorund to patching it. Its nothing a car duster cant handle :) I doubt that its from any waxes that I use that attracts dust.

If you don't want to go out and buy anything else, then just follow DKs advice and stick with the NuFinish. Laters

I have a specific wheel cleaner that I really like. I'm looking for one product that's effective to clean both tires and wheel wells. Particularly, something that won't damage wheels if it drips onto them.

My favorite 2 things to use are Amazing Roll Off or Meguiar's APC+ 4:1. They both work great. But I think Amazing Roll Off works better overall. Spray it on and let it soak while your cleaning your rims. Then scrub it with a wheel well brush. Hose it off and be amazed! Hope this helps!

I have a motorcycle and really like the cleaning action of S100 made by the same people that make P21S. I personally use P21S for the wheels and tires and spray the S100 in the wheel wells and let it soak a bit while cleaning the wheel and tire. Depending on how dirty the wells are will determine whether or not you have to use a brush in them. Curious, what wheel cleaner are you using?

If you are inistent on using 1 product Autoglym Custom Wheel Cleaner works very well.

What I do is use the Autoglym Custom Wheel Cleaner for tires and rims and then Megs Super Degreaser for the arches...

Having Megs Super Degreaser (or comparable) should be a staple in your chemical arsenal anyhow....
