What do you think of Satin Black paint?

Well its been a bad week on the car front!!!!!

I got my first stone chips on the Ferrari....It's on the hood surround between the hood and front nose (which is Armourfended).....I already have the car booked in to take care of it....I don't know whether to have the area sprayed, or to have it touched up.....If they touch up the paint according to David's how to guide.....what sort of results can I expect....Does anyone have any photos of a before and after, done this way......(there are two chips, very small, but the car is so clean that they show up)



As I said it's been a bad week........Two days ago I am in my Jaguar XJS (one of the last ones made) I'm stopped behind a car turning (on a country road) and BANG this idiot nails me from behind....he must have been doing 60 (thats mph not kph!!!), he's written his car off, and slammed mine so hard that the car is about an inch shorter than it was & the exhaust has gone through the rear tyre!!!! The car is on a jig at the moment to check the subframe.....I think it is probably a write off....And as if that isn't bad enough I have a whiplash & minor concussion....Life SUCKS this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I have had great success with this touch up method especially with a solid (non metallic) paint. SteveL recently fixed a big chip on his black BMW and it is almost totally invisible.



I would suggest against a repaint. Touch it up and live with it. Your car, while beautiful, deserves to be driven.
 
So sorry about the bad news. I would tend to side with just touching it up for now. I would save the repaint for a much more serious scrape or horrible scuff. Or worse, some idiot keying it.
 
Glad to hear that you are OK. Cars can be replaced. People can not!

I've had a lot of chip repair practice this past 4 months on my Black 528.(20,000 miles in 9 months!) I can tell you that with a solid color, as long as the paint color matches the original, you should be very satiusfied with the results. Patience is the key here. Add <strong class='bbc'>small[/b] amounts of paint in the chip until it is slightly higher than the factory finish. Use 2000 or 2500 grit wet paper on an eraser as a block and work the paint down until smooth. I don't have any close up shots of my repairs to show, but can reasure you that it does work if done properly.

I am doing the same thing on my Maxima courtesy of all the darned road construction.

<strong class='bbc'>BW...[/b] The mirrors are Hagus from Germany, the frt. spoiler is RD Sport, rear spoiler is AC Scnitzer, Conforti performance chip, Fikse FM10s, clear lenses from Evosport and tinted windows. Oh yea, and a hand painted pinstripe using the <strong class='bbc'>///M[/b] colors.
 
Through the years I've seen lots of satin black "Rat Rods", older 1930's and 40's cars made into street rods and painted flat or satin black, primarily because it's cheap and low maintenance.

Now I'm starting to see newer modern cars with the Satin Black look....

I'm on the fence... some I like some I don't... (I like the ones that look professionally painted, but not the ones that look like they were "rattle-canned"!!!:rofl:)

I love the satin black look when done right. Although it is not for every vehicle. That last pic of the Jeep with the spray on bed liner paint job would be very low maintenace though. :biggrin:
 
Matte black was very cool back in 2006 and 2007 after 3M released a product that is essnetially a vinyl film in matte black color.

The 3M matte film has been overused by people who are paranoid about getting their sports cars scratched up.

nowadays, when you see an Audi R8 or a GT-R in matte black vinyl, you know the owner is more paranoid about getting stone chips and scratches than truly liking the color scheme.
 
I am with you Bill I am on the fence. I am not really into to the all black wheel fade ither. I think that it blends together to much and you loose the look a nice set of wheels can bring to a car.

There are some black or matte black wheels that look good, but the problem is, unless you're 5 feet away, you can't see them! The just look like ordinary black steel wheels with no hubcaps!!!

Part of the attraction of a nice set of wheels is that they look good when they're spinning! With black you lose that.
 
I agree and black wheels tend to just look dirty. For me they are best pulled off with at the very least a chrome lip or chrome inserts. Something to break the black up a bit.
 
I can't work up a lot of enthusiasm for any flat or satin paint scheme - even as a trim. It reminds me of the primer look - oops I forgot the color coat!

I can remember when people used to paint their cars with primer and leave it primed.

Then someone got the idea of BLACK primer.

Now they use black primer with satin clearcoat.

I think it's about the "badness" factor.
 
It's become over done. I do like the old school rods that do some satin black then accent it with a super high gloss black. I saw a picture of one recently and I wish I could find it. I think it was from SEMA.
 
It's not for me Bill. There is something about a black car that shines like a mirror. Having a matt or satin takes away from the beauty of a black car.
