what do you look for when purchasing a new vehicle?

1. American

2. V8

3. Rear wheel drive

4. Availability of aftermarket parts

I only want a vehicle to do 3 things: Look cool, be loud, and go fast. I guess mentally I will always be 16 years old. :)

you forgot a few things...

5. two door

6. t-tops/ conv.

;)

Something that just occurred to me- these days I look for an *absence* of things that I odon't want. I don't *want* about 99% of the electronic/entertainment/etc. stuff that comes on "nice" vehicles. I don't want satillite radio or a DVD player and my wife and I never even set up the navigation systems on our Audis. And it ticks me off that I can't (conveniently) turn off the ABS when situations warrant, the way you could on a lot of german cars back in the day. At least we can turn off the stability/traction control systems; I wouldn't own a car where you couldn't do that.

1. Balance

2. Handling

3. Steering

4. Brakes

5. Power

6. Styling (I greatly prefer a minimalist design, especially in the interior - the less buttons/knobs/lights/gadgets, the better.)

Mostly, I look for that intangible quality that inspires confidence in the machine, allows for a sense of tossability, if you will, and the fit between my driving style and the car.

After my trip to the kennel last weekend, I'm suddenly looking for *ROOM* in a vehicle. Not gonna be easy to reconcile *that* with the driving characteristics I usually value :o

FJF- Yeah "balance" and "tossability" are a great combo, and some cars just "fit" certain drivers in a sorta intangible way...your "inspires confidence" is a great way to put it. And, heh heh, I sure agree about the minimalist approach :xyxthumbs

C'mon Accumulator, you are an Audi guy there are some options that fit your needs and likes....S4 Avant? If only they sold the RS4 Avant here. What about the A6 Avant? If you don't mind the gas guzzling the Cayenne S and the X5 all offer doggie room and some nice driving characteristics.

Depends on vehicle function. If it is for the family hauling duties: safety, comfort/convenience, space, reliability, ability to tow, etc. If it is for a weekend cruiser, or occasional dd for myself: style, power, handling, ease of DIY work, price.

Believe me, I've tried to find a more roadworthy choice!

Those don't come *close* to the amount of room I need for 3 Beaucerons, their equipment, and our stuff (winter clothing, etc.).

I've had smallish wagons (and you *bet* I checked out the S4 Avant!), and medium-size ones (I've had a '95.5 S6 and '00 AllRoad and some Volvos), and I also checked out a Cayenne (the turbo :D ) and the new Audi what's-its-name SUV thing (yuck!). None offer nearly enough room or the right back bumper (see below).

And to get the dogs in/out (especially in all kinds of weather) I need a rear step-bumper that's impervious to marring, so I can't even go buy a current-generation Suburban/etc. No way I want marring on the back bumper, and loading through the side doors with the seats folded doesn't always work out too well, especially when they get older. That alone eliminates almost everything that's fun to drive.

Minivans can work with all the seats out, but one of those is enough for us! Nah, it's gonna have to be a Suburban or Yukon XL :( Escalades aren't my style ;)

I look at the Deal period, with a little edge to having a warranty. We have all seen that the "reliable" cars are less reliable and the "unreliable" cars are becoming more reliable. The domestics have stepped up their quality and are prices better, and the so called "Foreign" models have taking some hits in quality. I'm not talking about the high end vehicles like say BMW, but rather more middle of road makes like Honda, Toyo/Lex, Chevy, Ford. I will say that I still think honda makes the best car, but that's just an opinion and it sure is nice to have that 100k mile GM warranty as opposed to Honda's parch 60k mile warranty.
