What do you guys think about this??

I just got back from the garage... I decided to attack the nasty swirls & light scratches my car got from the evil dealership

Since it was getting pretty late, and the garage is kinda cramped (can only move around easily on one side of the car) I concentrated my efforts to the passangerside half of the roof. I had already clayed over the weekend, so the surface was very smooth and free of contaminates. Next I used Meguiars #9 with my cheap-o 6" orbital (sorry, no PC yet ;) ). I worked the #9 in really well with a foam pad, starting with moderate pressure and lightening up as the product dried. After buffing the #9 off I noticed a few of the worse scratches were still visable under the harsh garage lighting, so I repeated the #9 step once more. Then I applied the Blackfire polish using another foam pad on the orbital, applying light pressure at first and then just the weight of the buffer. I only polished once, because to my delight... the surface looked amazingly swirl free! To finish off the surface I applied 4 coats of the Blackfire paint protectant by hand with a foam applicator. All products were removed from the paint with microfiber towels from CMA. I am still amazed at how easy BF is to buff off, even though I got a little lazy towards the end and used a bit too much product on my 4th coat.

The results... BEAUTIFUL! I haven't seen the car in the daylight yet, but under the very bright and harsh florescent lights the finished half of the roof looks excellent! It really makes the other side look horrible actually

On another note, I think the Blackfire has been holding up well in durability. The entire car was blackfired over 3 months ago (2X BF Polish, 3X BF Protectant) and it still feels slick and sheets water. My only gripe is that is does lose that really nice soft slickness (like caranuba) after the first 4 or 5 washes... but I'm convinced that even though some of the slickness is gone that the surface is still well protected.

Sorry for the longwinded post... I'll post pictures later in the week when I get my digital camera back (loaned it out until Friday).

Did you notice any additional dust attraction on the vehicle after you applied the Blackfire? My car attracted dust like crazy on the back end until I put a layer or two of carnuba. I was just curious how many other people have encountered that.

Now that I'm up to about six layers of BF, my dust collection problem has gone away. Not sure why. Only other change I made was going back to GC shampoo instead of the BF wash.

Go figure. :nixweiss

I did some work on a dark red (Monterey Red) 2007 Corvette this past weekend. The car was in pretty good shape. Some very light swirls and a few random RIDS but nothing out of the ordinary. I washed and clayed the car on Friday night and decided to try out a test spot before I called it quits for the day. I started out with M205 on an orange pad with my flex working on the lower part of the front fender. After one fairly light pass I noticed some paint transfer on the pad. I thought that was weird but figured I would worry about it in the morning. The next morning I tired another area including the trunk lid and the same thing. Then jumped down to a white pad still had paint transfer.

This is only working a 2x2 section with light pressure. I was worried that maybe the clear coat may be thin. I decided not to do any correction just polished the car with PO85RD. There was no color on the clay so I don?t think it was over spray or oxidization.

Has anyone ever experienced this with mild correction?

Just a few afters

Some cars have a tinted clear coat, so even light polishing will get some color transfer. I'm not sure about this particular car, but I've seen it on some Mustangs. My old GT color was "Laser Red tint clear" or something like that.

I agree!

I have done a few of these and it has a tinted clear for sure.

Also have seen tinted clears - heck back in the day of auto painting, you would always add a little color to the clear the last few coats, to make it smoother and help in the "blend" area/s..

That is incredible work with Menzerna PO85RD !! Looks beautiful !!!!!

With Luster MIA and he is the resident vette expert I had to do my own research on Corvette forum and discovered this is one of the few colors that do have a tinted clearcoat. My understanding is that this is a 3 step process. Base coat, tinted clearcoat, and top clear coat (regular clearcoat). Now I have another question, does this mean at one point the top layer was removed and what remains is the tint coat?

Monterey Red (07 only), Crystal Red (08-up), Jetstream Blue (08-up), Cyber Gray (09-up), Atomic Orange (07-up), Velocity Yellow (07-up).... all have tinted clear coats. The tinted clear is the final coat of clear as I understand it.

Thanks for the list. I didn't know that Cyber Gray has tint as well, but I knew about Crystal Red (had transfer on this color).

Printed and kept.

For the record, I have noticed Milano Red Honda cars also have a tinted clear.

Yep. My TSX has a tinted clear. The 2010 Lexus I'm working on right now has it as well.

Tinted clear is basically adding the base color to the clear coat. IMO it's not a true "tri-coat" like you find in pearl paints. (Base, pearl, clear).

Is Monterey Red a metallic?

I did an older black Lexus that had a tinted clear. I dont think it is uncommon

That could have actually been single stage. I know Lexus is fond of that for its black cars.

Happened to me on a Chevy camaro with the Red Jewel tintcoat.... nothing to worry about.

Yep, that with the Aqua Blue on the Camaros is also a tinted clear. I believe all the GM metallic reds are now tinted. And a few select colors as well. Taupe Gray Metallic ('10-up).

You're welcome :)
