What do you all think of aftermarket wheels?

Well, maybe I can get an opinion on the wheels I was thinking about before the Cobra R's. Thought they didn't look as "stock" but not bad, not too flashy. Not as wide though, and I really want the 255's. Borrowed some pics from tirerack.com & tires.com.

ASA JS5's 18 x 7.5" (kind of like these, but 18's are expensive to keep tires on)

or

MB Motoring Rev 17 x 7" (*really* pushing it, narrow, but I like the 2 tone, with the textured metal and painted in the openings)

I like the ASA wheel with the machined lip, that feature can look real nice with the right profile tire. I actually have a set of the MBs I use as a winter wheel, got them for next to nothing through Discount Tire's Ebay sales, they had minor blemishes but I wanted them for the winter. Check out this link if you like the ASAs and MBs, I had a set of these but sold them because I just had too many wheels but these were great wheels, light and strong and the co. ships free in the USA.

Trends come and they go. 20 years ago gold BBS and Panasports were the rave now chrome wheels with every conceivable design and diameter are in vogue.

Well said! How about the gunmetal or black rims that a lot of import wanna-be racers are doing now?

I have almost the same rim as the pic below, which are similar in design to Luster's, except mine are silver, 17" w/ 215/45 (Katana VR7).

Red Sled, if you don't like the wheel gap you have right now, getting aftermarket rims will only accentuate that gap. The gap might actually get smaller, but it will "look" bigger. Definitely get the 1.5" drop you mentioned. The pic below is a perfect drop, IMO and is what I currently have on my civic (except of course, w/silver rims...same design).

customwheelsmarket.com is actually the same site that has the Cobra R's. I like those you posted. Those rivet-y deals look pretty cool, which is why I like those last 2 I posted. I'd really like that Binno if the 5 spoke was inset in the wheel instead of on the outside edge.

I do plan on the minor drop next. The 255's will actually be .5" greater in diameter too, so the combination should get me a nice looking stance. Sounds like splitting hairs, but just a little can add up to make a nice difference. If I went to the 245's, they'd be .5" shorter, which would increase that gap. That's why I think I've got to go with a wheel I can cram the 255's onto, without giving up tread life.

Keep in mind the offset and how the 245 or 255 will play into any possible rubbing issues. With all factors considered, that .5 more or less in D might matter in the final setup. That Binno wheel looks a lot nicer in person, the picture just doesn't do it any justice.

Consensus is that 255's on these will be fine on an SC. Could go up to 275's in the rear, but that would be pushing it and may or may not rub. That's a lot of tire (& $$$), 255 is plenty.

The worst thing I hate about bigger rims is when folks have 18" wheels with stock brakes.

Looks like someone has stuck a CD behind the wheels and sorta gives away the fact the car isnt really a performance vehicle.

That and when certian people space their wheels out ...

WHY ?????????????????????????????????

They can pick up roller skates alot cheaper down at WalMart.

Intermezzo,

I love those Gunmetal rims!!!!

I was really torn between gunmetal and chrome, and I like chrome on a black car. (and my wife wanted chrome!)

Your rims are WRONG! (I have recently learned that wrong means good.):up

They are also SIC!!!

:) :xyxthumbs

Bill.....

I was thinking about getting some nice rims for my GP. Snce there are something near 1.2 trillion black GP's on the road, I wanted something that would make my car a tad different. I found the rim, but they don't make them in my size...:D

Are you sure it's "Mexicans" who do that? Aren't they also the same people who turn their cars into things that appear in the "Transformers"? Yeah, I think they're referred to as the Decepticons.

Tortoise, those wheels look nice. :up Imprezza's are definitely NOT part of the "wanna-be" category...

Luster, that's not a pic of my ride but someone else's at a different forum I go to. Mine are the same design but silver (hyperblack)... But I agree...I think this design is SIC! A definite improvement over my plastic hub-cap covered steelies.

:D Just giving you some grief . . .

I really like anthracite for my car because it contrasts with the silver body color . . . the stock wheels kind of clash, because the silver comes close to, but doesn't match either the color or the flake of the body paint. The biggest plus to the dark wheels IMO, though, is that they never look dirty, even when coated in brake dust.

Out of the two you posted, I like the last one. :D

I love what a nice set of aftermarket rims can do for a car. I'm running 17x8 BBS RK's on my Audi. The agressive offset and beefy tires (255/40 17") really fill the wheelwells out nice and the car handles a thousand times better than with the stock rollers (16x8's) The nice thing about the BBS rims is that their design is pretty timeless. Trends come and go, but wheels such as BBS, Panasport, Fikse, etc... (ones that have roots in racing) tend to stand the test of time better. Here's a pic of my baby

For me, the decision to change to an aftermarket wheel for looks depends on the factory rims the car has. I've worked for a few car dealers and I've talked to a lot of people trying to decide whether to go factory or aftermarket. Right now I work for a Porsche/Audi dealer, and I've seen a lot of cars change rims even before delivery, especially on A4's. Take these eBay cars, for example.

Here's one with the standard 16's. I don't like this look, the 215's look too fat for the car IMO.

This is my personal favorite factory rim. It's a 17 in, and it still retains the clean look. The only factory rim I like better are the Avus S4 wheels.

Finally, here's a car that's been lowered w/ aftermarket 19's

fbaefac4.jpg

While I think this last car looks very good, for the expense of those 19's and lowering springs, the owner could've had a car that looks just as good by ordering the larger 17's from the dealer when he bought it. Its all personal preference, but sometimes I think people are too hasty to ditch factory wheels when often times they look just as good.

EricZ, its not just the appearance of the wheels that some people go for, its also the weight. I have the Avus S4 wheels but they weigh 28 lbs in 17" size. Many higher quality 17" wheels are 20lbs or less, and can be stronger than factory if they are forged.

I love the look of aftermarket wheels on some cars. I was never totally fond of the stock 300zx wheel. So I eventually upgraded to the SSR Integrals with 17 inch tires.

Kinda got bored with them and got a beautiful set of fully polished HRE's in a 18/17 combo. I love them.

There are alot of cars that I love the standard/stock wheel on though. It all boils down to your personal pref.

HREs = $$$ - nice wheels, but kinda pricey ;)

How was the fitment on yours? I know some people have complained that the wheels were somewhat damaged out of the box - either some of the bolts that hold the spokes to the outer rim would be loose, or the chrome would be blemished, or other minor things of that nature - any problems with them?
