If you look at your surface under direct sunlight and different angels you will see 100,000 very very very thin sratches. They are called swirl marks because they look like they are circles all over your paint.
Think of them as micro scratches in the form of a circle.

Here is a pic of carguy's porsche swirled up, probably from using the wrong towels or improper buffing techniques. The concentric circular ones you see (not in this pic)are mostly spiderwebbing in the base coat of paint, or an optical illusion caused by the refraction of light.....mostly on black

Rubbing your car with any towel that even has a few specks of dirt can cause this.
Using a applicator pad with not enough product on this can cause it.
Just running your hand ovr a dirty car can cause those swirl marks.
Anything that comes in contact with your paint and grinds in dirt can easily damage your finish. You need to make sure your washing with clean water, clean towels/mitts, if you can use lots of suds in the soap, rinse your washing towel/mitt often, don't over rub your surface when drying ... see where I'm going with this. Just try to keep everything away from touching your paint, if it must touch your paint try to make sure the paint and the item are clean and contact is kept to a minimum.

were taken under hi intensity lights.....to the naked eye in normal sunlight most of that would be invisible.

Joe, what kind of applicator pads are you using?
The applicators I use won't even do that dry to even a CD.
