Wetsanding

How do you wetsand? How do you know when you need to wetsand? How do you revive the paint after it has been wetsanded??

Thanks in advanced!

I have spot wetsanded several times to remove (or reduce) scratches that would otherwise have taken too long to compound and polish out.

Bringing back the gloss happens by compounding/polishing with a rotary or DA polisher.

I wet sand a lot of cars and you'll need several tools to get a professional finish:

1. Paint thickness gauge. Get a good quality one and measure your starting point as a reference. You'll also want to check your work with the gauge to make sure you don't compromise the clear coat.

2. I use 2500 grit (sometimes 2000 grit on some finishes) as my starting point and finish with 3M Trizact 3000 grit pads on a air powered random orbital. This gives a flat uniform finish for compounding.

3. A rotary with a wool pad and compound. Sometimes I use 3M Perfect-It 3000 compound or System One X3. Both are good and will get the job done

4. A spray bottle of alcohol and water for a wipe down. This will help you in checking on the results of your work and insure you didn't miss any "haze" from the sanding. There is nothing worse than going back after you find those spots.

Here's some before and after's

Hope that helps. It's a time consuming process on the sanding and compounding process, but the results are great. This car consumed approx. 40 hours of work.
