hey guys

Just a question on wet sanding I have been having a lot of customers lately asking to get there deep scrachs out so I have been indulging in a little wet sanding it has been working out great I wet sand then use a wool pad with my compound then use a 3m black foam pad with my glaze are these the right steps, or should I not be using the wool pad? Is there a better foam pad for cutting??

Treatment Man- It probably depends *most* on what stuff you're using (from the paper to the compound to the pads) and also on the paint itself.

I can get 2500-3K wetsanding marks out with a foam cutting pad and a mild compound, using safe speeds (under 2K rpms), though not always on the first or second pass. You might at least give it a try if you have a pad you can spare, it might take off less than the wool (but still enough). Since you're getting good results now, if it doesn't work you can always go back to what you're currently doing.

I use Lake, Meg's, and Cyclo (for 4" work) cutting pads, but I haven't tried 3M.

Heh heh, I hope those insistent customers don't keep getting new scratches, what with all the paint you're having to take off ;)

thanks guy for your responces one more other question what grit of sand paper do u use? it seems like 2000 to 2500 I ve been useing 1200 is that two aggressive?

and i have been thinking of useing the with cutting pad from 3M it should be less dirt then the woll but do u think it will cutt as good?

Are you using a rotarty or PC to try to take scratches out?

I would leave wet sanding as an absolute last resort.

The 1200 would be too aggressive *for me*..this is sorta risky stuff to be doing anyhow. But that's just IMO, and as you can tell, I'm sorta careful about thinning the paint too much. But if I can't get it out with 2-3K I'd leave it alone.

Maybe not as well, but good enough, especially if you're using finer sandpaper. I've done 2,500 paper (actually a 2,500 block) then 3M PI-III RC (05933) *by hand* with good results, though I did then follow up with some machine work. The less serious the sanding marks, the less serious the compounding needs to be.
