Wet Sanding

My brother inlaw, just had his car painted. He wants me to wet sand it, making the paint almost perfect. Then clearly buffing it out. He is willing to pay, how much should I tell him?

I would be a family member first, then a businessman - Tell him not to worry about making his paint perfect, tell him to save the clear for when he needs it (to polish out swirls and for protection)

Ya that^^^. I've done too much wetsanding for defect removal to even consider it for OP removal anymore. He'll need his clear later on, I wouldn't remove any for vanity now.

If he insists then I'd probably make him buy me a case of beer. He's family, afterall.

Like everyone else said, unless the body shop put an extra coat or 2 of clear, I wouldn't wet sand it. Typically, on cars that are being painted for shows, they will add a few extra coats of clear/paint if they are going to color sand knowing they will need to remove a lil bit to remove the FLA aka Fat Lady's Arse aka orange peel.

I never charge family.

I'm not a professional detailer but I have been in a similar position. The only person I would never charge would be my mother. Everyone else gets charged (even dad). Maybe not the regular rate, but they get charged something. I found that when you charge nothing, people associate your service with having no value and your time becomes worthless to them. Additionally, I find that family, more than anyone else, will complain about anything and everything. Thus, your original 4 hours of work becomes 6 or 8 hours total.

I've also encountered businessmen that will not conduct business with family at all. If something goes wrong, you not only lose a customer, but possibly a family member. It can make family gatherings quite uncomfortable.
