Weekend wheel repair (w/ PICS)

J.J.

DEEP & WET
The other day was relatively bad for me. I went into work at about 4 am to round on some patients and found a few that were not doing too well. I worked diligently to get them T’d-up and feeling better, ensured the on-call doc understood the issues and finally left around 11 am. I pulled into my garage and got out my vehicle forgetting that my brand new Blackberry was laying in my lap. You can figure out the rest of that story I’m sure. It wasn’t destroyed, but I sure did scratch the hell out of it!

Once I was finished bitchin’ about that I decided it would be nice to spend some time with the family at the local park, so my wife, daughter and myelf hope into the wagon and head to the park.

On the way, I remembered I needed to stop by the bank and make a deposit. Being the lazy SOB that I am, I decide to proceed through the drive through. I pull-in and make the deposit successfully, proceed to pull-out and as I’m making a right turn out of the stall, I hear the dreaded sound of wheel curbage. It was dreadful to say the least. I only heard the sound for a second, but I immediately knew there was damage to be seen. I quickly found a parking hole, got out and inspected the damage:

I reality the damage was minimal, but because I;m a rather anal and this car is only a month old, I was still pretty pissed about the situation. I got past it for the family sake and we continued our journey to the park.

After returning home, I hopped on the internet and did a little research on the Mazda 3 wheel color. I found that Dupli-color made a silver that was a apparently a pretty close match to the 3’s wheels. With that, I went and gathered the appropriate supplies:

And, got to work:

Taped:

Sanded:

Painted:

Results:

I was pretty happy with the results. The paint isn’t a perfect match but only someone involved in concourse (sp?) show-car judging would notice.

Just thought I’d share my weekend events with you people!

Sorry to here about your bad day.

Nice work on the wheel, must be rewarding to complete work like this on your own and get such great results.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I was surprised at how relatively simple this repair was. it was definitely worth the time and $10.

Great results. You definately give me hope that I can do the same to two wheels on my Sentra. Hopefully I can find a color that is similar to my wheels. Thanks for sharing your process and results.

Great job, looks excellent. Was there any primer involved or just the one coat of paint??

Actually, primer was somewhat of an afterthought. I probably should have used some and if I have to do it again I will. However, I did use 3 coats of paint applied approximately 30 min. apart.

Nice job you made it sound so easy.

It really was quite easy. I'm not trying to make it sound that way... it just is.

Thanks again all!

makes me want to fix the curb rash on the wheels on my S60

Too bad they're painted silver metallic (same paint as the car I think), which is hard to match

Looks great, sorry for a dumb question but did you wet sand or just sanded dry? Looking on doing this just curbed my second wheel, trying to be carefull and parked a little too close to the island. Funny how sometimes the more anal (carefull) you are the more duh moments happen. By the way yes my first post... been trolling for a while and thanks great site learned a lot. New to this level of detail obsession.:heelclick

J.J.- Nice job :xyxthumbs Good ending to a bad day :D

Some paints for wheel applications seem to work fine without primer (sorta like engine paints I guess), so I bet your repair will hold up fine.

sdat1333- Find out the paint code for the wheels. Dealership bodyshops oughta know what you should use. If it *is* something special, you can get a paintshop to mix up a spraycan's worth of it. But between the various brands of silver wheel paint, I bet you might even find a good match with a little trial-and-error.

J.J. great work on your rim , i have a Mazda5 with a scratch like that and going to repair it soon. Thanks for this post!:2thumbs:

Can you give me the exact name of the paint you used?? Same car...same problem...:(

Ditto here. Mazda 3, same wheels.

Got one to do the same thing with. Yours turned out nice.

I gotta give that a try this weekend.

What number was the dupli color paint ?

Thanks
