waxing new paint

I recently bought a hood scoop for my truck and it was painted to match the rest of the truck. How long should I wait until I polish and wax it??

What could happen if I polish and wax too soon??

You can polish if you use a body shop safe polish or a *pure* polish without added protectants. I believe the minimum is 30 days, but 90 days is preferred before sealing and/or waxing. 3M polishes are perfect for this by the way.

If you seal the finish too soon, you will disrupt the curing process.

Get some #80. It'll leave some protection for your freshly painted surface. Do it by gently by hand if you don't want to use it for swirl/scratch removal. :xyxthumbs

I had a new fiberglass hood painted with Dupont. I called them and they said to wait 120 days. Called Megs and the tech guy told me to put on Megs #5 glaze every 2 weeks until the paint cures. I am following his advise.

That's a good choice, other glazes that are non-abrasive and new paint safe are Meg's #3, 3M's IHG (Imperial Hand Glaze), and 3M's PI III FG (Finishing Glaze).

You have to be product specific when picking a glaze because some are not new-paint safe (will not allow the paint to cure properly).

I sure agree about the Meg's #5, it's my favorite fresh-paint glaze. I've been using up some IHG just to, well, use it up, and "yuck". The #5 is easier to use and leaves a slicker surface. Also holds up better to rain, etc. (not that any of these hold up that well). #5 does dust a little though.

Others are #7 and #81. I've had *one* instance where #80 was too abrasive for fresh paint (3 week old RM b/c), no way I could use it on that paint, its initial bite created marring that wouldn't go away as it broke down.

Dunno about the Menzerna FTG.

Interfering with the curing process can lead to permanently soft paint.
