waxing kills factory clear coat

true or false? ive heard it many times by applying wax, it can shorten the lifetime of the factory clear coat thats already on the paint.

does the same go for cleaner wax, polishes, paint cleaners, carnauba waxes, etc?

and off topic: can claybars remove the wax that you put on the car weeks before? is it very easy or got to put some time into it?

Wax does not harm the clearcoat. You CAN wax too much if you're using an abrasive product. Something cheap like NuFinish.

Yes you can polish too much, because polishes are abrasive.

Can clay remove waxes? It depends who you ask. I think it can, but it depends how much pressure you use on the clay, and how long you clay the area.

Not applying protection to the finish can shorten the lifetime of the clearcoat.

Pure waxes and sealants won't do any harm to your paint.

D4cmaN- Yeah, don't worry about waxing or even sensible polishing. It's a *lack* of protection that'll cause trouble. We keep some of our vehicles a long time and years (or even decades) of polishing and waxing haven't hurt them yet ;)

The factory clearcoat is just a layer of unpigmented ("clear")paint. You don't want to thin it too much by polishing all the time, but if you use common sense you won't ever have to worry about that. Left unprotected, this layer of clear paint will fail, so you do want to keep wax/sealant/etc. on it.

I clay all the time and it doesn't strip my LSP (Last Step Product, i.e., "wax"). But I clay very gently so YMMV. The first claying, where you're cleaning the (bare) paint, can take quite a while, and in that case you probably *will* take off any wax that's on the vehicle. I'd just wait to do a major claying until the next time you're gonna polish/wax anyhow. Then you can use the clay to clean the *wax*, which will be on top of the paint.

What's protecting the clearcoat? Let's face it unless the car's going to be in a museum it's going to get pounded by the environment we live and drive in.

Sounds like a car dealer's tune.

The wax and/or sealant protects the clearcoat. The LSP is a sacrificial layer that takes the pounding from the environment, instead of the clearcoat.
