waxing a new car??

hey,

i have heard from a couple people lately that you shoudl not wax a new car for the first couple months.... not sure why. is there any truth to this and if so why?

also i will be gettign a new car in the next couple weeks and i live in NY so i will be driving in the cold and snow. Obviously i cant hand wash in the winter. what do you reccommend to keep it clean? are touchless car washes ok?

this is one of those "used to be true but not any longer" kind things that never dies. You can wax a car immediately after purchase (hey, otherwise they can't selling you these ripoff sealants, can they?). modern paint jobs are baked and have fast cure times, especially the clear coated finishes. do not use those waterless car waxes, they could do more damage than good.

I like Meguiar's products so I would use #20 as a base coat and top it with #26 or P21S/S100. The #20 will hold up just fine on its own too. I just like the way #26 and P21S/S100 looks as a topper.

As car washes go I think the guys drying at the end do the damange not the car wash itself so I would use the self serve ones.

Good luck with the new car! What kind and color????

hey thanks for the advice,

i will be getting a 2003 black corolla S. its not the fanciest thing out there but right now i have a my toy car (2003 mr2 spyder) and i need just a basic transportation winter car with a few options. for the price, i have not found any better than the 03 corolla S.

the other thign i forgot to think about before is that it is black...i think it looks great when clean but in the winter it is a real pain to keep clean with all the salt. any tips for that other than just makign sure to wash it often?

Hi, Spyder:

A Polymer sealant should get you through the winter

I can only tell about Zaino : it can be layered , so you can "build" protection.

Maybe someone else can chime in about the other sealants or search for Klasse , Blackfire

After the winter you can go back to Carnauba's or whatever you're happy with.

i have never used a polymer sealant before... does it go on just like wax? is it expensive or difficult to do? will it stain my rubber trim/moldings? need the info.

goes on just like wax, but the cure (drying) time can be extensive, depending on temperature and humidity (can be hours). If you use Zaino, they have an accelerant (ZFX) which can be used in place of the normal Z1 surface prep. This will let the Z2/Z5 cure in a matter of an hour or so iso several hours. removes easily when dry and leaves no residue. does not seem to stain trim like waxes do. zaino like other synthetics leave a very reflective shine, almost chrome-like. to me it looks like there is another layer of acrylic on the surface. if you use carnauba based waxes (S100 or P21s is the way to go), the shine goes real DEEP.

I looked on Classic Motoring Accessories website where i get all my car cleaning stuff and did nto find zaino. i did find Klasse though (http://store.yahoo.com/classic-motoring/kla-16.html).

the only thign that concerns me is at the bottom of the page where it says:

Con: Can highlight swirls and paint imperfections.

Con: Some enthusiasts feel the shine is "sterile" on dark color cars.

is this just referring to klasse or it this true of all polymer sealants?

also it mentions this:

"Special note to perfectionists: Wipe a final coat of Klasse High Gloss Sealant over the All-In-One for even greater shine and durability."

is this worth doing?

and how bout this:

Take a dry Viper Microfiber Detailing Cloth (not the Glass Cloth) and fold it until it’s palm sized (5 to 6 square). Lightly mist the cloth with Eagle One Wet Wipe N’ Shine. Apply a dab of All-In-One to the cloth about the size of a nickel. Apply to one section of the car at a time (i.e. a door, 1/2 of the top, etc.). You’ll notice that it wipes on very easily (thanks to the lubricating action of the Wet Wipe N’ Shine) and leaves virtually no residue. When you’re done with one section, take a second, dry Viper Detailing Cloth and re-wipe the area to remove any residual residues.

is the eagle one stuff good to use? i have never used it before.

1. To make a car shiney, it must be reflective- the finish must reflect light. When light hits imperfections on a dark car, they show more. But don't worry- the product is not making things worse.

2. That is true. To create the depth you want, layer your Klasse or Zaino with a layer or two of P21S.

Good luck!

Have you read Jimwh's Klasse instructions in the Autopia Articles forum? Click this link:

Jimwh Klasse Instructions (updated)

E1 Wet works fine but regular water will work just as well.

In my experience, Klasse does not highlight swirls or imperfections. On the contrary, I think it does a fine job of filling and hiding fine swirl-marks.

Also, don't make too much of that "sterility" statement. That is a trade-off you sometimes have to make in order to get the durability of Klasse or any other high quality polymer sealant. A regular wax will last you 1-3 months...Klasse will last you 6 months or more. Although it's true that nothing can beat the shine of a good carnauba wax, just one coat of Klasse AIO + Sealant Glaze will still give your car an excellent shine. Each successive coat of Sealant Glaze will improve your car's shine too.

Keep in mind that you can also top your Klasse layers with a coat or two of carnauba wax.

::::Edit::::: JayCat, I just noticed your post after typing up and posting this message. You're absolutely right. Great observations! :xyxthumbs
