Wax Topping

Im going to be polishing my hood sometime soon, and I plan to finish it off with Optimum spray wax. I cant seem to get over the old-fashioned notion that spray waxes are the weakest of them all, which is the connotation they used to have.. I realize that Optimum spray wax is the exception, and an excellent wax.. And its durable. Still, my question is, do you think S-100 (or P21S Carnauba) would be an effective topper to the Optimum?

Id put a paste wax under the OCW. You can always use DGAW (Aquawax) as an alternative to OCW. It can be found at any CarQuest.

So you favor using the spray wax as the topper over the paste. Is that just because sprays are equated to detailers, and detailers usually Follow wax applications? Since theyre both finishing waxes, would order of application matter? I guess the question is, would either of them tend to remove the one that was put down just before? Kind of would defeat the purpose of using it as a 'topper'!

Noting that I've never used OCW...

As long as the first wax is allowed to cure for an appropriate period, and the second wax isn't applied in an aggressive manner, I don't foresee any problems with the second one doing a solvent-action on the first.

Since I'd expect the OCW to apply/remove with less aggressive methods than the paste, I too would use the paste first. And I'd probably wait until after the next wash to apply the OCW.

+1, I agree with Accumulator and I have used OCW as a topper. GREAT BEADING by the way! Durability about average for a nuba...1 - 2 months max and I would reapply. Looks are decent but not fantastic. If I were you, I might get AW instead.

nuba, aw.. man, the acronyms are getting out of hand..lets try and remember not Everybody is an Autopian.. Take a few mos off, come back, and get totally overwhelmed by the new products, and hence, new acronyms. Ok, so Ill ask.. whats NUBA, and whats AW? Interesting that OCW makes the claim that its about the longest lasting carnauba based product out there. Right on the bottle, it claims 5 mos protection. of course, it depends on local conditions, but so does every claim, and you dont read too many 6 month claims from a carnauba based product.

Man. I used to be addicted to this forum.. Then I took a break, and have recently come back.. When I was a regular around here, it was Finesse-IT, Optimum spray wax, 3M products in general, and Poorboys products which ruled the roost.. Now, theres a whole host of new products Id never heard of. And of course, new acronmyms. But really, Im sure that my shelf full of what used to be in vogue just a year ago is still just as valid today, and before I get a whole bunch of new products Im committed to using what I have. NO reason not to the way I see it.

We move pretty fast around here these days. Gotta keep lifting the bar higher

Just how long were you away?

I use OCW especially on single stage because it lists it has UV protection, needed for SS paint.

Interesting; I have used OCW with good and bad results on single stage. I believe Anthony Orosco said it is not meant for single stage though.

I agree, Zaino rules here now and I don't like it.

Say one bad thing about zaino and watch as half the forum now hates you.

Ive only been 'back' for a few days now, but some of my early impressions of some attitude changes include:

Meguiars seems to have had a resurgence in popularity. Back in '05 and before, it was viewed as kind of only a small step above the commercial turtle-wax type vendors.

3M, by the same token, seems to have taken a popularity plunge. Back then, it was considered one of the best true professional product labels we could use at home. If we could only own one polish, Finesse-IT was THE one to have.

PB2.5 was fairly new at the time and was considered one of The most effective polishes out there. Still seems to be, although its been joined by products like Optimun Polish, etc.

The whole Menzerna thing has taken off like a rocket.. And Im not even sure XMT existed.

I have one car. .True, it occupies a very disproportionate amount of space in my brain, but its still one car. To care for that car, I have 12 bottles of Polish alone covering the mfg range of Meguiars, 3M, Sonus, Poorboys, and P21S. For the LSP category, Ive got Blitz, S100/P21S, Collinite, Griots, Meguiars, 3M, Optimum, Pinnacle, and Poorboys.

Im only mentioning this because, much as Id like to add to my product arsenal to include some of the latest and greatest, the fact is even if I dont add a single product to my mix, it would be impossible for me to use up even what IVe got now, before it turns to oatmeal on the shelf. For a single vehicle, I think my current product assortment is more than adequate to give me the best finish I can attain. Ive got about every cut covered, and while I think Id like to add Optimum Polish to my collection, the fact is IM positive that the level of cut and functionality it provides is or can be duplicated within my current product assortment. It takes supreme restraint to be a good Autopia member, because without it, it would be far too easy to accumulate, in short order, so many products that the only option available would be to open a store to try and help dispense with the results of an unrestrained 'eyes bigger than stomach' phenomenon!!

Still, I enjoy reading about all the new technologies, and marketing schemes, that come along every couple years in the quest of The Best homegrown auto finish.
