Wax, Sealant or Both?

I have two personal vehicles--my wife's CR-V and my S2K. I use Ultima Paint Guard Plus exclusively on the CR-V. It's a large car, and UPGP is just too easy to use. After each wash I wipe down the vehicle with Megs' UQD.
I have been using various combinations of products on my black S2K. Last spring-summer-fall I used several different carnauba waxes. After each wash I would wipe down the car with Sonus Carnauba Spritz. This past October I applied two coats of Blackfire Wet Diamond. After each wash I wipe the car down with FK 425. This seems to be a good combination. Three weeks ago we had a break in the weather, so I also applied a coat of Megs' Ultimate Quik Wax. I trust (hope) that the UQW did not compromise the protection of the WD.
After my spring detail (April?), I intend to apply a coat of Wet Diamond, topped with Midnight Sun. I will then probably maintain the paint through the summer by the application of various carnauba waxes. I have several products I want to try, in addition to Midnight Sun (P21S 100%, CG 50/50, Lusso Oro, M16). I will probably continue to use FK425 as my wipe-down detaiing spray.

I was a wax and sealant guy but lately I have moved to a sealant only. It is just so much easier to work with, cheaper for the most part, and I feel better looking.

3 coats of BFWD + 3 coats of either Natty's Red (summer), or Collinite 845IW (Winter) for me. I also use a spray sealant in between washes.

Usually 2 coats of BFWD, which is just about the only sealant I use nowdays... that stuff just rocks. Followed by a thin coat of some sort of inexpensive 'nuba like P21S, blue cap, which is excellent wax for the money. I like the way carnuba "warms" up the paint's appearance after the sealant. I actually just use the wax for the look vs. protection; I figure the sealant's going to handle that just fine.
I let the BFWD cure for at least 12 hours between coats, and after the wax cures for 24 hours, I usually have a hard time not going over the paint one time with Z8. Z8 after properly cured sealant/wax is pretty much the icing on the cake. The key with the Z8 is a 4oz. mist'r bottle and so you just use a tiny bit on the car... makes the finish pop like nobody's business!:clap:

If you like a hard candy shine then stay with sealants.

Use a polymer for durability ? Use an organic wax for depth of shine- best of both worlds, a polymer sealant with a Carnauba wax LSP
An oganic wax also provides a sacrificial surface that will resist acid ( salt brine, bird excrement, acidic rain, etc) better than a polymer, which forms a molecular bond with the paint, whereas a an oganic wax forms a semi-hard protective shell (although it lacks durability)

For myself, I usually have to clay every four weeks anyway, so I repeat by applying sealant and letting it cure overnight and then applying the wax.
Even if I don't clay, when week four comes around I still apply one coat of each.

For me it either a wax or a sealant and it will depend on my mood. I find myself using sealants more though as I find them to attract less dust.
I can see myself going to only a sealant sometime in the distant future. Until then I have a bunch of waxes that I need to use up first. :money: :money:
Ironically, I only have two sealants right now. BFWD for my black Camry and Ultima Paint Guard Plus for my wife's Trailblazer.

i'm sold on the bfwd as my sealant... been using z6 after washes but just got a bottle of bf spray detailer. can't wait to use it but it looks like were in the dead of winter so prob won't happen until late march or early april. gone away from waxes as the time it takes and durability make it a waste of time.

I still have Zaino Z2,Z5, ClearSeal on two of my vehicles and BFWD x 2 on another, all get Zaino Z7 carwash soap, and Z6 and Z8 afterwards.
Here in the rainy NorthWest, its too much trouble for me to use a Carnauba - but I DO have a can of Midnight Sun, for some playing around with in the Spring when hopefully it warms up enough to help spread it around easier..
If I lived back home in Nothern Calif., I would have already tried to use the M/Sun, since they have way warmer weather all year long compared to here.
I want durability/protection up here, and all of my customers so far, want the same. Alot of them are now very happy with BFWD x 2, and I hope to get them all back this spring for a re-charge of it !

I agree, Dan. My customers feel the same way for their daily driver vehicles. For my classic car customers, they want BEAUTY! So carnuba over sealant is the way to go for them, but those cars spend the long cold winter in their climate controlled garages!!!!

I dun really like waxing ... too much work and i dun get much durability. It is much easier to use sealant.
