water spots???

hey guys, im new here. i have a 2000 mustang gt, with bright atlantic blue paint. problem is it sits outside at my dads house, and i get water spots, which dont come off from washing. is clay barring gonna help me? i dont want to ruin my paint w/. these water spots. somebody help me out!!!
 
They are called water etching. I have them too and at this very moment tryign to get rid of them (when i go into garage). The only way to remove is to try some Vinegar/water mix and leave it on for 2 minutes or use a Porter Cable polisher and try to polish it out.
 
dont wanna polish, im afraid i will mess something up;( plus i dont have a PC. i guess i need to soak something w/ vinegar and water, and let it sit, that oughta take awhile to get off my car, huh?
 
Well the vingar/water mix will only do so much. It all depends on how badly its etched into the clear coat.
 
Try using a light abrasive polish by hand, work it in well, work/apply in small areas at a time. And then do not park there anymore, find a new place, try putting a cover over it.
 
well i dont have another place to park, but i do have a car cover i could bust out i guess. what kind of light polish do you recommend, and can you get it at a local auto parts store? i guess clay barring will not remove the etching?

i was thinking about some pads, and then some ssr1 all the way up to 2.5 to see if that helps? sound about right?



also i have heard about a product called ducky's, is that safe to use on clearcoat/paint?
 
nah no sprinkler system, we live out in the country. it really was like that mostly when i bought it. not so much from what i've done to it.
 
I have the same problem, especially with the spring rains where a cloud passes by, sprinkles the car and the sun comes up and craps out the whole body before I can make it o the spot to QD it. :hairpull



I have two bodies FULL of spots. Both are big pain in the butt since one is small but black, the other one is silver but huge !!! Wife is bitter about the spots on her black baby and she wants it fixed first and asap. :bat



Well gotta fix that first :scared: and take care of my silver beast later on...



Gonna do my "salad routine" first... (The vinegar trick) I just wander if I should go for a regular red or white or a better solution with some "Balsamico di Modena" :D I am sure wife will prefer the latter, being the gourmet she is... I could not care less tho...

Griots Machine Polish 4 and one of their Orange Pads (NOTE: Never mix products on your pads. Once you use them, then mark them with a marker on the inside as to what product you used and never use it with anything else again). You can use a carnuaba wax or Griots Best of Class as a wax, or as others have suggested Klasse All-In-One is a great product too.

Now come on... You surpassed me with being anal !! I just wash the pads with dishwashing detergent and hot water and there is not even a trace of product left on the pads... But you have real neat ideas... :goodjob

Polish = abrasive and the stronger the polish, the stronger the abrasive. While I do clean the pads, I just don't trust any other technique because I don't want to end up using a pad with a mild Machine Polish 4 for the final pass only to disover it was used with Machine Polish 1 (the most abrasive) previously and that I didn't get 100% of the grit out. Seeing my final pass swirl up my car would totally ruin my day, so the money for the extra pads is worth it.

i tried the ssr 2.5/orange pad, then went to ssr1 on a white pad and followed w/ some gold class wax. sux that the water spots are still there. am i not letting it work well enough? i mean, i got the water spots knocked down a little bit, but they are still there.



any suggestions? perhaps my technique isnt up to par? im working it til it dusts a little bit, but it's not doing what i had hoped. im putting 3 3 inch long stripes around the outside of the pad, then working about a 4 square foot area.



the paint looks glossy and awesome, but the water spots are still there in the sunlight. perhaps they are etched far enough to need wetsanding and re clearing
 
Optimum is coming out with a water spot remover. Scottwax had a sample and did an excellent write up on a white car that had rust and severe water spots all over the rear of the vechicle due to a fire sprinkler leak in a garage. You may want to seach for that posting.

Wow, those are some serious spots then! If that didn't work, then you are going to need to go to a more aggressive polish. However, before you do that you may want to try just putting your glaze on top of it all and see how you like the results. If it is good enough, or close to it, then you'd probably be better off living with it rather than buffing off more clearcoat.



If you find some magic solution besides a more aggressive polish, then be sure to let me know!

i have also read that i might need to follow the orange cutting pad up w/ a white pad w/ the 2.5 also, then go to 1. should i do that>
