Watching My Neighbor Wax His Truck

I try not to look down on people that don’t care for their cars as well as I do. I am already known as the guy who is always out buffing his car. I see people washing with Dawn, in the sun and using washcloths. If I get a chance to talk to them, I would offer help. But, my free time is limited with a house, cars and a business.

I know that not everyone wants to do five steps to detail a car. Some people want to slap on one coat and be done for the year (hence NuFinish). Others feel that it’s just a car and is lucky to get washed. I’m sure they have other priorities as well.

Does it pain me to see a nice car with neglected paint? Yes, it does. But, I don’t lose sleep over it.

What bugs me is people that have money coming out of their ***, spend $75,000 on an M5 or something like that, then have it look like complete garbage, rashed rims, drawings in the dust of the car, etc...do they really just have that much money to burn?? I guess so.

Turtle wax 2001 is just to chalky and people seem to use a alful lot of it.I.M.O. if you want to go cheap use Meguiars cleaner wax or Mothers cleaner wax , if you want to go better use Gold Class or Mothers Reflection, if you want to go better yet then go Mothers or Meguiars 3 step .

Most people wont do the work involved to keep a sharp car.It isent that hard if you keep after it .Most people dont care enough to clean and polish cars but thats the only thing I care about . I like to detail cars ,Ive returned rented cars waxed. Ive had company cars that I kept waxed. If I borrow someone car for a day or two I returned it waxed. Driving a car without wax on it is like walking around naked.

Thats what I've noticed also. I've always taken really good care of my cars, the cars of others, my parents cars, I just enjoy it. I get it from my dad, he's a huge car guy, and refuses to drive around in a dirty car. He's always told me "Its like wearing a muddy torn suit".

Even before I found Autopia I had a PC, and SMR and #7 and Zaino. I was shiny. Of course, my Zaino washed right off because I put it on over #9 and #7 but hey, what can I say?

Now, I'm a site manager and moderator over on the US Lexus Owners Club forums (there's a couple of LOC members here), and one of the things that I do is try and impart the knowledge that I've learned here on Autopia to our members. People are interested "How do I make my car pretty" "How do I make it look like yours" etc. I find that owners of new cars are MUCH more receptive to what I suggest then owners of used cars. Even people who have just bought used Lexii (Lexuses, whatever) because what I suggest they do is less. If someone with a moderately neglected black 1996 LS400 wants his car to look like my brand new and Autopian maintained car, then he's going to have to do a lot of prepwork, maybe invest in a machine like a PC and pads, I tell them to come on here, and before I know it, they're totally turned off of the idea. Its almost like shell shock. They thought it was a miracle in a bottle when in fact its either good care along the line from new, or a lot of time and labor intensive restoration and prepwork.

I can usually sell the new car guys on the light and easy care, sheepskin mitts, real carwash, clay, a polymer sealant and microfiber towels are easy. Hours of work, abrasives, possible machines are much harder to sell.

So get em while they're new guys!

My latest saying is "There's a reason detailers get paid for what they do..."

I think a Dawn wash will take care of that! :D

That pic reminds me of the Eagle One WaxAsYouDry ads you see in motor-trend.

Yesterday I was driving by my meighbors house about 4 doors down I saw him pick up a dish rag and wash his truck the only problem was the rag was on the ground no bucket in sight just a hose on a new dakota

A future SMR customer is how I look at it

UPDATE on previous post - "My father has a 1995 4 Runner that has never been waxed, and washed probably six times. While visiting recently he was going to wash it with with a sponge off the garage floor that is used to clean the lawn equipment. I went nuts, so i spent the rest of the day and detailed it. Looked better than the day he bought .

He took my sister to buy her new Camry Tuesday. The dealer asked him if he wanted to sell his 4Runner, "It looks like you really take care of it" . They made him an insane offer, now he's driving a 2004 Sequoia. He wants to know if I'm going to Z this one before it gets too dirty.... :angry
