Wasting my time w/ wheel protection?

I`d like to reiterate .. CAREFUL with Simple Green! It can ba caustic to aluminum and is harsh on soft bushings. Throw it out and get a car-care specific APC and use it as directed.

Wish I could remember the Username of the guy here who gradually ruined a set of (nearly new, factory finish, not compromised) VW wheels by cleaning them with a not-really-strong dilution of Simple Green. Happened so gradually that by the time he realized something was haywire they had to be refinished.

And *!THAT!* with regard to using it on aluminum stuff period. They make a special version that`s supposedly aluminum-safe if using the Simple Green brand is a big priority.

I can`t stand the smell of simple green. My Dad uses it on everything. I won`t even have a bottle in my house.

To everyone using a paint coating on wheels or a dedicated wheel coating, ABOUT how long does durability last before you see degradation? Which product are you using and how many months does beading/easy cleanup/gloss...last?

I recommend twice a year for most people ... (before and after winter)

I usually apply twice per year. Fall and Spring.

I use PBL Wheel Coating and get around 9 months before I feel the need to reapply. I might be able to go longer, but the beading starts to degrade and I figure I might as well since it doesn`t take more than a few minutes a wheel. It definitely saves me money on heavy duty color changing wheel cleaners. Just using the power washer cleans them pretty well.

Huh, when I coat wheels (so far I`ve only used OptiCoat) I sure expect it to last a lot longer that you guys seem to. I expect my FK1000P to last most of a year and the coating needs to last more than a year otherwise I wouldn`t bother with it. Maybe mine don`t need redone as often because I only use shampoo mix to clean them.

Heh heh, and as per usual, it sure takes me a lot longer to do them too...the wheels *must* come off as the back sides always need redone first, and even if I left them on, some have tricky areas that that take a lot of care to do properly, e.g., the Tahoe has centercaps that take forever to do (actually faster to remove those and do them and their fasteners separately then reinstall and touch up the coating as needed). Even the easy ones have pockets (lugs, valvestem) that are a hassle to prep for recoating.
