Washing with city water?

I feel your pain, my city water is ridiculous hard too. I can't even wash with the sun out because I'll get instant spots and I'll need to break out the vinegar to get the spots off. Got a TDS meter on the way, will be interesting to see how bad it is.

Looking at their chart, the FC024 looks like it'd be best for what you're after as it'd most closely mimic the treatment provided by a regular water softener.

Disclaimer: BUT I'M NO EXPERT so my advice is worth what you paid for it ;)

I'm looking at it this way- sediment filters catch "big stuff", but the softener oughta help deal with the mineral content that makes you water "very hard".

I wouldn't expect much relief from upping the ONR concentration as you'll still be getting the "mineral film from the hard water". Replacing that with the much lighter film that "soft water" leaves behind might be the next best thing to using RO/DI water.

[Repeat disclaimer...]

Ok great. Thanks! Really appreciate it. I'm going to order one in the next day or so then.

Heh heh...so my disclaimers didn't scare you off? :chuckle:

I do think that oughta help, I just wonder how often you'll have to "recharge" the thing. Hope it doesn't become a huge expense, but hey...seems like your options are kinda limited, what with the apartment situation and all.

Post back about how it works out if you get a chance.

Yeah and I used to think the water at my house was hard. Lol. This stuff I guess you could say etches, but not like what people use that term for normally around here.

But yeah I cleaned my wheels last night with ONR, and on the clear coated polished lip that I sealed with a coat of KSG, at the very bottom where water would drip from the rotor, there's a big puddle of white sediment or a calcium deposit I guess it is, inside the barrel. I really need an electric leaf blower here like I use at home, but IDK if they make ones that are pretty quiet while at the same time have enough power to actually get the job done. I was thinking the Chemical Guys portable one, but I'm not sure yet.

Main issue is tackling this water problem without a doubt. I'll let you know how it goes when I come back in a month since I'm going back home for the rest of the summer tomorrow morning :D

Maybe you can get a few coats of protection on there back at home, where the water is presumably better.

You at school or something when at the apartment?

This thread prompted me to grab a TDS meter. SO far work water is ~250ppm. Home is in another county/water area so we'll have to see. I think work needs to change their water filter too, 150ppm out of the water cooler...lol.

Yeah I have an off campus apartment when I'm at school.

So what I've noticed at home is that the water is better, but not a whole lot. The major difference at home compared to my apartment is that when the water dries on the surface, if I just go over the area again, the spots go away just fine. At the apartment, if the water dries, like especially on my wheels that I'll clean at night, then just let the car sit for a day so the remaining water inside the brakes can dry, I noticed there were what seemed to be large calcium deposits on the bottom of the wheel. Inside the barrel, I was able to just scrub with ONR on a MF, but on the lips, I had to use a chemical like Chemical Guys Ez Creme glaze or KAIO to remove the spots, even though my wheels are coated with KSG.

Pretty common proble. And I feel your pain. Keep a quick detailer and MF towels in the trunk and wipe off the spots whenever you see them. And re-seal the surface on a more frequent interval.
