Washing used wax applicators?

First question... Let's say with a terry cloth applicator, how long do you use it before it either needs to be recycled or washed?

2nd... Can you wash these things? and if so, should i avoid washing them with my polishing clothes and terry cloth towels?

any help is appreciated!

I use alittle bit of dawn to wash them after each use. As long as they are completely dirt free, I will reuse them. If they have any dirt I just dump them.

Make sure to give them a good rinsing when you use dawn, you don't want to apply wax with a hint of dawn ;)

Nope, thats not dirt :) The dawn should remove all of the wax residue.

Dirt as in the applicator was dropped, or maybe the car wasn't clean enough and the applicator got some dirt on it while applying the wax.

If it's just for waxing, I am not too worried about getting all of the wax off. I give a good cleaning by hand with dishsoap, and let dry. But if it for compounding (SMR, glazes, etc) then I scrub really well with dishsoap and dry. The terry covered foam ones seem to last 5 to 6 applications before they start to tear and that's when I chuck them.

I mix some hot water and dawn in a bucket and let the applicator sit for around an hour. I then come back, dump the bucket out, rinse it out, fill it with cool water, and then put the foam applicator in the bucket of clean water. I'll then pull it out and squeeze the water out, get some more water out of the bucket, and squeeze it into the sink. I keep doing this until I get clean water out of the applicator. I then squeeze the applicator between to towels to get as much water out of it as I can and then stick it on a wire shelf to dry.

I keep using it until it gets stiff in the middle or until it is really dirty and I can't clean it.
