washer fluid add ins

while at the store today i was gonna buy an addin for my washer bottle it helps break down/melt ice and keep the window cleaner i think the product was by prestone. prestone and other products say it will dissolve ice but can it ruin your finish when the overspray gets on the car.
 
I've been using the P21S windshield washer fluid additive for many years and have had no problems. It does seem to add more cleaning power to the washer fluid.
 
have had this same concern. not so much with the finish but more with my lsp. so for that i just use distilled water and a half cup of spray and gloss or spray and wipe. either or.
 
I have the 1Z add-in. It makes the solution a bit foamy, but definately cuts through the crap much better.

Are you saying you use this solution instead of windshield washer fluid or just as a booster? This would never work in colder areas of the country because the water in your solution would freeze solid.

yea, i use it as washer fluid. i live in miami my suggestion should've been made clear. whoops.

speaking of cold, i think tonight we might be in for some 52 degrees f.

lol.. had to do it.

The warm weather is on the very short list of things I miss about living in Miami.
 
yea. i remember hirricane season just now and wishing i lived more up north. i couldnt have the car clean for more that a day without a stray shower (and when i say shower i really mean hose down from up above).
 
the product i mentioned is not your ordinary solvent i beleive the name is fire & ice and they product is suppose do melt away the ice that form i your windsheild. if it will melt away ice that fast what might it do the paint over 6mohth's of winter. this is a product i would like to try as long as there will be no lasting problems with the paint at the end of the season.

we have some computer savvy members here if you have a link that would be nice,then i will contact the maker.
 
On an semi-related note, Poorboy's Bug Squash works great as a washer fluid add-in for me during the spring and summer months when bugs are prone to affix themselves to my windshield. It does a wonderful job of breaking up the guts and goo and leaving a pretty clean area on the front glass.
 
joe.p, I take it your question about add-in's for windshield washer bottle is about de-icing, not de-bugging. Sorry, but I don't have a definitive answer for you, only that I have shared your concerns for this strong additive and what it probably does to all the hard work we put into our vehicles, and yes maybe even the paint. For that reason I won't be using any. I'll wait the extra few minutes for the defroster to do it's job. I won't even use a scraper on my glass. Course, that's just me. :angel_not
 
JcWhitney.com has a windsheild washer fluid heater. It heats it up to about 140-150 degrees F, hot enough to melt ice, not to crack winshields. Lexus now has this standard in all of their newer models. Might be something to look into.

Yea I saw a Buick commercial that said it comes with a heater on the washer fluid. I thought that was a really smart idea.
 
I lived in the cold at one time. And always used Fire & Ice (I think) it was in a brighter red or orange bottle. And I never knowist (sp?) any ill affects, but as long as there wasn't mud caked on my truck it was really clean to me at that time.
