Washed the car today, just one problem.

Since we had the first break in the weather today in about two weeks I took the opportunity to wash the car. I treated it 2 weeks ago with Autoglym Super Resin Polish and then 3 layers of Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection. This was done in the garage and the car has remained there ever since so I haven't really had the chance/weather to examine the results properly. So after I washed two weeks of dust off it I took a few photos. I'm quite pleased with the results, I've never tried layering the EGP before and was surprised what a difference it made, I've just ordered some Biltz wax to see what difference that makes.



There is one problem which I could do with some advice on. The exhaust (Tail pipe) on my car is supposed to have a gloss black finish, I'm not sure if it is anodised or HT paint, I would guess anodised, it looks terrible at the moment and I was wondering what you guys use to polish them. Should I treat it just like paintwork and use a mild polish?

I wish I coulda kept my black car looking like that, but in the Nevada heat it's really hard.
 
Well I heard of "Luster Lace", it is a chrome/pipe polish that is on a strip, you can wrap the strip half way around the pipe and pull on each end to polish it.



If the pipe is anodized then your safe, if the paint is sprayed on you should be safe but I would look into it. I doubt it is anodized though, anodizing is a very expensive process, who knows though, it's a Caddy, those cars are pretty high class.

I don't know about what to use on the tailpipe, but I'll say this, the car looks great!! Very shiny, very reflective, very good job! What year is it?

Not a Caddy eh? It looks sort of the like the Division Caddy owns with the little duck as a logo. I can't quite remember the name but it looks like them... First time I have been wrong at pointing out a car in years :nixweiss
 
yea u mean the catera... He is in europe so it is the Opel version, not the caddilac. And yes the US model did have a duck :p
 
But in other words it is a Caddy because Caddy owns them and they are using their design right? It's all Caddy, same car, frame, specs.... they got the blue prints from Caddy.
 
Speaking of German cars, for kicks I got a second job I worked at a Valet garage for a little while and man did those people like expensive cars.



Just about everything I drove was a Benz, Porsche, VW, Caddy, Vettes, Vipers, Ferraris and stuff of the sort. The Porsche was a really surprising car. I didn't know the suspension worked that well. Taking those turns in the garage it was either "learn to drive" or "smack into the wall". Those Porsches never even came close, they were glued to the floor......... expect once, had one sliding in second gear and the tail almost kissed the wall.
 
No doubt about that, my first car was a Porsche 914 which my dad bought new in '72.



I certainly never felt anything like it, mid engined and all.
 
We also had one of those twin turbo all whell drive Porsches. The model that does 0-60 mph in 3.4, that was something else let me tell you :-)



I drove the brand new Vette alot though, everyone always held the keys for me because I enjoyed it so much. I really miss that job.
 
Actually you're all right.



The car was designed and manufactured in Russelheim (Germany), on the continent it was the Opel Omega, in the UK they sold it as the Vauxhall Omega and in the USA GM marketed it as the Cadillac Catera.



Thanks for the tip on LusterLace Joed, I'll see if I can find an equivalent over here before I spring for the shipping.



Chuckmotor, It was first registered in January 1998 so we've just celebrated her 4th birthday. She got a full massage and a new set of floor mats. Hope the neighbours didn't think I looked too mental stood in the driveway wearing a paper hat and singing Happy Birthday. I'm currently trying to hide the fact that she's up for sale, she might get upset.:(



JayDub, very interesting link. That's a pretty good review of the car, quite accurate. I don't know about the reliability issues though mine's covered 63,000 miles and It's never broken down or had to have anything replaced other than the normal consumable items. I know that they had serious problems with the electrics though up until late 1996. Just one question though, what's the AARP? American Association of Retired People:nixweiss I gather that Cadillac has something of an image of being a senior citizen's car in the States?
 
Simon, I believe you're correct on the abbreviation for AARP. Needless to say, Cadillac has made quite a name for themselves among the retired community (and with rappers. :D)



As far as i can recall, the only real issue american journalists had w/ the Catera was that it was underpowered for their tastes.
 
Nice work:up as for the exhaust tip how about trying some watered down Clean Machine with a MF towel, or asking Vauxhall what material is used.



You will love Blitz wax. I cannot decide if it is better on top of Extra Gloss or the Resin Polish. Not keen on the Autoglym shampoo though, I find P21S much slicker.

Jaydub, I've never driven a car yet that I didn't think was underpowered.:D



IMO supercharging should be a standard feature.



I wish GM had done another collaboration with Lotus on this model. The Omega's predecessor had a souped up version called the Lotus Carlton, twin turbos, 0-60 in 5.2 and 176MPH top speed. Several years ago some nasty criminal types used a stolen Lotus Carlton in this area and were able to outrun the police helicopter on the M42 motorway. Pretty good bearing in mind the helicopter doesn't have to cope with company reps who think they own the outside lane.
