Wash and QD in a Michigan Winter

Hello Everybody,

We finally had a few hours of sunshine in the midst of our dreary Michigan winter.

I decided to sieze the opportunity and do a wash and quick detail on my salt encrusted car.

Sorry that there are no befores, but I had to work quick and only got some shots close to sunset.

The car is swirled like crazy, but I'm going to attempt to tackle that when the weather turns nice.

Here was today's process:

Wash car with Meguiars Deep Crystal Car Wash using the $5 Walmart foam gun.

dry with some generic brand synthetic chamois.

Apply Meguiars QD with waffle weave micro fiber.

Meguires Endurance shine on tires.

THe car will probably look like garbage as soon as the weather turns foul again (tonight?)

but this is the best it's looked all winter.

I appreciate all comments, criticisms, and feedback.

Thanks for looking!

Ahh....isn't it nice to have a clean car during the Midwest winter? I must say though, your swirl problem might be due in part to using your "generic brand synthetic chamois".

Do you run those wheels year-round? I assume you have some performance all-seasons on them?

Yeah, I run them year round. I just purchased them at the Tire Rack, actually.

Since I live in Detroit, I decided to make a trip out of it and drove there for a tire and wheel purchase. Pretty Cool operation, I must say. :)

I'm thinking that when I get a little bit of money, I'll go for a separate set of winter wheels, but it seems that every year, we get less and less snow.

Global warming?

So far, I can think of three days total that winter tires would've been the shizzle.

mostly, it's just wet.

I probably won't be able to afford winter tires before the apocolypse anyhow, so at least this way, my car looks a little snazzy in the winter. heh heh!

Now that I finally got decent wheels, I HATE the stock wheels! I'm almost willing to slide into a lampost in the winter just so I don't have to look at those stock wheels again. Ha!

BTW, the swirl problem came from a year of going through the $2 car wash before I found this website. :wall

I'm such an idiot.

I'm not too fond of my stock wheels anymore either. But their purpose now is to wear the snow tires, to keep me and my car safe when the snow falls. Actually I have one of my summer wheels sitting here next to me in the living room, glistening away in the lamp light. :D

I've noticed the decrease in snow as well. And now we're supposed to be back into the upper 30s by Thursday. Crazy winters we've been having here.

What kind of tires are you running on those wheels?

Sumitomo HTR+ 215/45/17.

The price of that tire is what allowed me to get into a 17" wheel.

It was either that or the Fuzion HRi's.

They are probably an all around mediocre tire, but compared to the stock firestones that came on the car, these things are great!

i think the hri's are truck tires, i have the zri's for summer performance tires and they are awesome. and snow tires on the stock wheels. is there a tire rack location that you said you went to? i thought they were only online, where did you go?

The HRi is an H-rated all-season performance tire, while the ZRi is a Z-rated summer ultra high performance tire. They are both meant for passenger cars and sports cars.

I believe he meant that he drove to the TireRack warehouse in South Bend, IN?

Naw, the HRi's is the all weather version of the ZRi's, or something like that.

The TireRack is located in south bend, Indiana and their warehouse/showroom is about the size of a small european country. It's friggin huge!

It's about a 3.25 hour drive from my house.

I even checked out their BMW 3 series cars that they use for track testing the tires for their reviews.

83 here yesterday in Dallas. :)

Nice looking car, I bet it will really look great when winter is over and you have a chance to go nuts on the finish.
