Warning:Painful roof damage...PDR or Body Shop needed?

So what option is best?

  • PDR and hopefully some wetsanding and it'll be better.

So a giant tree limb fell through my windshield and missed my steering column and wedged into my door card while the branches broke off on top of my roof. :nervous2:\

There's some dings on the roof but there's only one I'm really worried about. It looks like it pulled the paint a bit and it's right after the roof brace.

Sorry for the ginormous pic but it's almost 3mm deep almost like a spear point into the roof. So I'm thinking 3 options. :think:



1. PDR and hope for the best and wetsand later.

2. Body shop and hopefully they don't have to use too much bondo.

3. PDR to get it as smooth as possible and then go to the body shop so they don't have to use too much bondo.

Body shop all the way....looks like you can at least keep the painting to just the roof though without blending.





IMO there is nothing wrong with bondo when used correctly.
 
I have a $1000 deductible. Got an estimate from insurance company for around $3070 - $1000 deductible. I have another door card so I'm not worried about my interior. Had the body shop do their own estimate and it came to about $2070 for repair of roof and hood with repaint on both.

I took it to my PDR guy and gave it a 9 on a scale of difficulty. He said he can try to repair but might still need a body shop to smooth it out and repaint.
 
I cannot see PDR being able to do too much with that one. The metal has actually been stretched and needs to be shrunk, smoothed and filled. Sorry to break it to you. Rasky is correct, body filler is just fine when used properly. If they just tried to "frost" over that, yeah, it'll pop out after the first bump you hit.

I've seen AMAZING PDR work done in the past. I had dings that were almost exactly like yours, except on my trunk lid and quarter panels. General rule of thumb is, if the paint itself is cracked or broken, you're SOL on PDR. But, if the paint is good, and the dent isn't at an extreme 90-degree angle at the peak of the dent, PDR should be able to get it out without much issue. Cost-wise, it would be a lot cheaper as well. That said, I don't have any experience in roofs and PDR, only doors, trunks and quarter panels.
 
Yea my PDR guy pretty made the "Hmm, it's gonna be a tough one" face. He also said it was stretched. But I'm not quite sure what the body shop has planned since they're not replacing the roof. I figure I'll get a deal to PDR the whole car. Hopefully it'll be less 'bondo' for the body shop to use before the repaint of the roof.
 
As I said before, they'll shrink the defect with a series of hammers and dollies... and maybe a little heat. Anyway, you are unnecessarily concerning yourself with the use of body filler. Take it to a reputable shop. Get referrals. Do your research. It'll be just fine.
