Want to start doing it on my own

Im looking for any help/advice in starting my own fixed location. Ive been sifting through a lot of older threads and collected some great data. But, I dont know really where to begin...

Obviously, I need to find a location. There are a few (somewhat) wealthier communities near me so I feel those areas would be a great place to start looking for a shop. Im still researching my competition and from the looks of things, most are just hacks. While I dont feel this area will warrant much paint correction work, I think it would be great for marketing a higher level of detailing. I am more than confident in knowing that I can provide said higher level of detailing to my customers. But how do I get my clientele base up. As of now, I only have a few select people that I detail for. How can I expand this? What kind of startup costs will I be looking at? What about insurance? Other than the obvious products that will be needed...

Would a small business loan be a good way to fund these startup costs? IIRC, you need a business plan to propose to a bank for the loan correct? If so, any advice on a plan?

I know that's a lot of questions. Id really appreciate f anyone could assist in answering some of them or lending any additional advice. I would be happy if someone could just point me in the right direction and research it myself. Im really looking to hear from past or present fixed location owners that could lend a helping hand to someone wanting to fulfill their dream. Feel free to PM.

Thanks guys

dealerships can be your back bone. at first no one knows who and where you are so dealers can help you get threw hard times . they are good for the winter/ hard times

when it comes to location either be on a busy street and pay more rent which means faster servce needed, or around the corner spot = lower rent spend more on advertising but you have more time for quaility work

GOOD LUCK!!!

Sounds like you have lots of research and planning to do. A fixed location is going to require lots of start-up capital. Depending on your location, you are looking at $1000 easily just for monthly rent. You are also going to need a good marketing budget for phone book ads, direct mail, internet (website and sponsored search), etc. Word of mouth is great, but it takes a while to build. You are also picking a very bad time to start a business. Right now, many people simply do not want to spend their money on luxury services, such as detailing. You may need a plan to get a loan, but they also look for how long you have been established. In my case it was having a business license for two years. The business plan is a good idea anyways. I wish I had done one when I started. Do your market research carefully. Take into consideration the car washes that offer "Express Details" as well as the other actual detail businesses.
