Waffle Weave?

What is the correct way to use a waffle weave MF, especially with ONR?

Every time I use mine, it streaks like hell after just using it on the roof, windshield, and rear window of my little civic. Is there a certain brand/towel that is better and more absorbent than others, or is the waffle weave simply not used to completely dry a vehicle?

....I have had mixed luck with waffle weaves. I have 4 relatively new ones sitting in my towel cabinet that are pretty much worthless to me. Even after multiple washes they perform as though they were treated with 3M Scotchguard. ....they simply move water around. On the other hand, I have several older ones (of another brand) that are still in good condition and work great. I also have a new WW glass towel I bought from PakShak as a sample that appears it would work quite well for this task. If this is an indication of the quality of their larger WW drying towels, I'll likely place an order for some when I get ready to buy more towels.

I guess my point is that WW performance will certainly vary. While some seem to absorb quickly and work well, it's been my experience that others simply do not. ....or don't do as well. In either case, I usually don't use WW's in the rare cases I do a wash with ONR. I prefer plush/semi-plush towels for that task.

Can't comment on the ONR use.

For normal wash, I have the Cobra Guzzler and I am really happy with it. Easily dries my VW EOS with no streaking if sheeting has been used when rinsing.

I have found starting with the windows to moisten the towel before moving on to paint is helping to avoid streaking.

Hope this helps.

As "Kean" posted, go with the Pakshak waffle weave towels. Always wash separately from your other mf towels to prevent cross contamination. I like the Ultra Soft Waffle Weave that Pakshak carries.

The correct way is to not use waffle weave towels but like wannafbody said, a thick towel with a good nap. I've been using some really nice 16 x 16 530 gram MF towels I get from my Optimum/Leather Master distributor.

Are we talking about drying after ONR or washing with ONR? I have never had a problem drying after an ONR wash with a ww.

Both. I really, really, really don't like waffle weave towels. I don't think they have sufficient nap to adequately protect the paint from potential scratching and I don't think they dry as well as thick, heavy weight MF towels.

I prefer the real thin and soft light blue waffle weaves that have the silk edges. They seem to be more absorbant than the thicker ones for some reason.

I don't use the WW to completely dry the car, they are more of a first pass. I follow with a regular MF and a QD.

The softer mf will absorb quicker. The thicker ww needs to be pre-moist before it starts picking up water. The thicker ww will hold more water, but it's harder to wring out.

Wash with your normal wash media and then follow with a nice quality waffle weave towel. Some towels in general depending on the company just don't perform as well as others. I have never had issues with my waffle weave towels. I generally use 2 to dry a my personal vehicle and i don't have streaking issues.

Try picking up some Pakshak Waffle weave towels. If for some reason you continue to have streaking you may need to switch to a towel that is saturated with water or you can use a towel that is a little more plush with a QD to pick up any left over streaking.

Have you tried it the opposite way?

I think I have but I honestly can't remember. I find that the plush towel removes most of the ONR and the ultra-soft waffle-weaves removes the rest, with no streaking. At least so I have found. Perhaps I'll try the reverse my next ONR wash and see which method works better.

I like to use the ww to get the bulk of water off, but purposely leave some water behind and follow up with the Pakshak's Ultra Plush or Big Boy. I sometimes will spray a QD after the intial wipe with the ww and then follow up with the ultra plush.

I think that one reason I prefer to go with the plush towel first is for safety. If there is any dirt particles still on the paint, then hopefully it will be captured into the nap. PakShak's ultra-soft waffle-weave is no ordinary waffle-weave towel. I feel very comfortable about using it to complete the drying.
