VW Phaeton

From Car and Driver: "The Phaeton, which sells for between $68,000 and $104,000, "fell a little bit short of our expectations," Volkswagen spokesman Tony Fouladpour said. The company is currently selling only 90 Phaetons a month, he added."

What I personally find odd is that it will still be sold in Europe. Is there a larger VW following over there that's willing to spend that kind of money on it?

Yes because Americans are so concerned about what others think of their car instead of caring about how they feel about their own car. Hence the reason there is no Acura in Japan its all honda, no Infiniti In Japan all Nissan, they dont need status symbols in many other countrys to sell cars, quailty sells them alone.

You wont be able to make that statement in the next 2-3 years.

recently seen a VW advertisment giving $14,000 cash back on purchase of already heavily discounted Pheatons.

thats $14,000 cash !!!

i also heard they share a platform with a Rolls Royce of some sort???? (not that platform sharing is uncommon these days!)

pretty sure it shares the same platform with the Audi A8.

Accumulator-Don't get me wrong. I get treated great at the Honda dealership. They go the extra mile. Mercedes and Acura just seem to kiss my a$$ a little more. No big deal to me, but I'm sure other people expect it. :LOLOL

The Phaeton is a great car. Built in the same plant, sharing Bentley parts. An old A8 owner, who bought a Phaeton has photos of his Phaeton with Continental wheels on it on an A8 forum, and they look great.

Volkswagen is not known for selling high $ luxury cars, nor for providing the pampering that luxury owners expect. Accumulator, you had an exceptional experience, but it seems its not the standard.

Marketing aside, the Phaeton is a well made car, and in my mind, a good looking car. I don't like the Bangle BMWs, love the new A8 and think the Phaeton is a great looking car. And since they depreciate like heck, you can pick up a low mileage one in the $40s, breaking into the $30s pretty soon, I would bet. If you could be assured on parts, and would drive it a long time, it would be a pretty cool ride. Not sporty like a S8, but more like an S-Class Benz.

To each his own.

Heh heh, the VW dealer treated me great when I only bought one vehicle and the Benz dealer treated me so badly that I sold both our S-classes and my dad also sold his SL! Guess it's risky to generalize since it all boils down to the guy who owns the dealership and the people who work there.

Oh, and some of us take a different view of the Audi/VW/Bentley relationship- The new Bentleys, while having finally become modern cars technology-wise, seem to have lost a certain something compared with the days when they were hand-built by Rolls Royce at the old factory in Crewe England. "Better" isn't always "better" if you get my drift ;) It's like comparing an atomic clock with a mechanical watch- and to each their own.

The Phaeton is an amazing car.

It has been kicking serious butt in Europ ein comparisons and has been selling very well over there.

The reason is, VW is a home brand in the EU. Everybody knows it and kows what they can deliver.

The US knows Jetta. Thats it. Plus, VW had a terrible reliability problem when the Phaeton came out. Coil packs, window regulators, MAFs were running rampant.

For the US consumer, it sounds cooler to say that you have a MB or BMW then a VW.

I have not seen one on the street yet, so it has to be terrible.

If you ever get a chance to see one at a dealership, take your time. Look at the car, the interior and all the things it comes with. That car looks like a finely cut diamond.

The interior is just amazing. The vents close with a wood pannel, so the whole das is just wood. No vents to be seen.

For people that are into "detailing" this car has some many "details", which were carefully constructed and taken into consideration that it is just a shame for it not to be selling well.

Americans, like usual, have a different taste. Last time I saw a huge hole in the center console of a MB SL55. Just a wide gaping hole at the end of the armrest. This was the all too dreaded cupholder. What a shame.
