VMG bet 1z & 476 affect durability or a waste

Hey there,

Sorry in advance for the long post. I've been doing some reading for the past few months and just recently (& unexpectedly) got a PC 7424 & pad kit (from autogeek), which I haven't tried yet. I'm getting ready to do my winter detail. I live in Alaska, park outside, and don't have access to a heated garage, so I need a durable product to see me through. Collinite 476 seems like the ticket for my circumstances, and I suspect it will look nice on my '07 Mazda CX-7, which has copper red mica paint. I plan to apply 3 coats of 476 as my LSP, (several days apart), before it gets too cold. I'm hoping you folks can help me settle on the rest of my plan.

After washing & claying, I plan to do a light polish with 1Z MP before I wax. I'm wondering if it makes sense to follow the 1Z with VMG. (I already own both products, along with the 476). My paint is still pretty new, but it does have some swirls and minor scratches that I attribute to some ill-considered washing & drying before I found this site & fell in love with ONR & fancy MFs.

With the 1Z MP, I am not likely to achieve any profound corrections, but I figure I can still get some improvement and it will give me a chance to get a feel for using the PC, without exposing my paint to a more abrasive product in totally unskilled hands. I'm thinking that the VMG may help me get the most out of what I do accomplish.

But I don't want to use the VMG (glaze) if it will interfere with my LSP's durability. My 476 will have to see me through a long winter of touchless washes. I'll use 4*UPPS as a booster after washes for as long as the weather permits, but that option will probably not be available for much of Oct to April.

Also, if the VMG is not going to add anything over the 1Z + 476, in terms of looks, I'm happy to skip the step. (I do look forward to playing with the product next summer, along with some others.)

WRT pads, I plan to start with the white for the 1Z. And if the VMG stays on my agenda, do you suggest a white pad (a different clean one of course) or a gray? I'm leaning towards the white, but would love to know what you all use.

I appreciate any advice or insights you have to share. Thanks in advance.

With a good polishing, I don't believe that the glaze will be necessary anymore. I'd just use the 1Z, and then go on with the 476Sx3. I'm sure it will last you through the winter quite well, especially if you plan on topping after some of the washes.

Not a problem. I think you should take some pictures after you're done if you can:)

I'm not so worried about taking the pictures, but posting them. I guess I can use all that time I save by not glazing to figure out how it's done. :chuckle: Thanks for the prompt.

Haha, I can tell you how to post images. Usually you'll want to scale down your images to 1024x768 or so. This makes the image smaller, easier to upload, and is suitable for most screens (except those that run 800x600)

I generally use imageshack to upload my images. In order to upload multiple images, you can download imageshack's toolbar and upload multiple images at a time. After uploading, they give you a link for forums, and you just copy and paste into your post. All done!

The website is ImageShack® - Hosting

Here's my first try at posting pictures (note to self - learn to take better pictures):

The pictures are of my first polish & waxing with 1Z MP + 3 layers of 476s. I had to drive through an alley being all dug up so I didn't both trying to clean the tires. (It has also been the summer of chip sealing in my neighborhood so I've about given up.) Anyway, today we had our first sun in far too long. I'm very happy with how my first PC-detail turned out and thank every one here for sharing their good advice. I have much to learn but am enjoying the process.

(Sorry I didn't park somewhere more interesting.)

Thanks guys. The 476s + my remote start are probably a outside parker's winter-best-friend. I'll let folks know how it holds up. I'll use 4*UPPS after washes to boost it further after washes (until it gets too cold) and hope to have the protection last until April or even early May.

Thanks again.

UpNorth- Hey, that did turn out nice!

I dunno if the UPPS is gonna work well over the 476S  I've only used it over other sealants. I'd just put on more 476S when you can and use a carnauba-rich QD after each wash (Griot's SpeedShine works well over 476S for me on the Blazer).

Thanks so much. I love my CX-7 and it generally makes me smile to look at it, but my smile is even broader with its current polish & wax job. I owe you!

Thanks too for the caution on the UPPS. I got that on the advice of Patrick at Exceldetail.com. I had a different QD in my basket with the 476 but he suggested that the UPPS would be a better choice. (One advantage of most places treating shipping to Alaska differently is that you get to chat with great folks like Patrick when you place an order.) My harddrive died and I lost my e-mails with him so I can't confirm it, but I thought we talked about my putting the UPPS on top of the 476s. Now it may just be that the UPPS was a better choice than whatever I had picked out. The Griot's speed shine (or other carnuba based QD) may very well be the better solution overall for going on top of 476s. At the very least, based on your experience, we know it works. I may pick some up to be safe.

If you don't mind another question, how cold do you think it can be and still work the 476S? I was thinking I'd need to be at least in the 50s. (Summer here is generally in the 60s with occasional 70s. Our lows are already starting to drop into the 40s.)

If you try it, please post something about how it works/doesn't.

Yeah, I'd want it at least mid-50's but I've never tried it in colder temps. I *think* I'd rather use their 845 in colder conditions, but man would it take a lot of shaking to get it ready to use.
