Very Light Holograms/Buffer Trails...

Last week I spent two evenings doing a full paint correction on my 2004 CTS-V which has had a life of automatic car-washes, and the swirls & RIDs were horrible. So I went to work at the correction, and the first evening I used the SIP to get rid of the deeper stuff, then the next evening I finished up with the PO106ff, followed by the glaze and then wax.

Two issues did come up though, my halogen light bulb blew out towards the end of the cutting process using the SIP, and had to finish up with my minimal garage lighting, and on day 2 I had to speed things up b/c I needed the garage the next morning for a last minute appointment, so I probably didnt work in the PO106ff as good as I should have...

When I finished with the car (see pics below) it looked fantastic and was an unbelieveable difference, but then a few weeks and few washes later, I am noticing some light holograms/buffer trails in sunlight ONLY (I really cannot see them at all under the 500w halogen or my LED shoplight) and theyre only on the hood from what I have seen in the sunlight. I'd like some second opinions before I go back and spend some time getting them out; I am thinking I should be fine with the PO106ff and a polishing pad but actually spending time working it in? I think I was just moving too fast with the PO106ff, but would like others input... I'm not some fly-by-night'er that found himself a DeWalt, I've been using the DeWalt for 5 years now for paint correction issues (see my other work - Home ) I think I just figured it was my own car and I could get away with moving a little "quicker"... guess not.

Here was my process:

Wash with Meguiars Gold Glass shampoo and grout sponge

Pinnacle Clay Bar

Menzerna SIP with a cutting pad (DeWalt rotary at 1400rpms)

Menzerna PO106ff with a polishing pad (DeWalt rotary at 1400rpms)

Red Moose Glaze by hand

Pinnacle Liquid Souveran wax by hand

Here are the pics right after I finished it:

Here are the pics I just took in my garage, you can kinda see 'em (sorry, didnt have my camera with me during the day when I noticed them in the sunlight)

I'd hit it with 106ff and a finishing pad, work is for a good long time. 106ff fills like crazy, so you're just seeing the holograms it left behind and filled in during your first session. When you're done this time if you want to make sure you haven't filled hit the hood with 90% isa/water then stick it in the sun.

Edit to add - I stopped used 106ff because of how much it fills. I use FPII/205 for finishing now. If you have them you might give it a whirl. They can fill too, but quite a bit less than 106ff ime.

you know, I have never really loved the SIP/106 combo because of how finicky it can be, and have heard a lot better things with 105/205 combo.

I'll try the 106ff and a finishing pad tomorrow and keep you all posted. Thanks for the quick reply Picus!

I've heard good stuff about that stuff, would you suggest it with a finishing or polishing pad on a rotary?

also, for the future, what steps would you suggest, going directly from the SIP on a cutting pad to the 106ff on a polishing pad then 106ff on a finishing pad, if I were to keep using 106ff, or a similar polish?

I'm afraid I might be missing a step, i.e. using a polish and finishing pad to clean up anything left behind.

Looking at the pictures, it seems like SIP did minimal correction. That stuff can hide imperfections well too.

Dan,

What makes you say that? Besides the light holograms, the swirls and majority of the RIDS are gone.. I wish I had a before picture... it was absolutely horrid.

I'd be more inclined to say 106ff didn't cut enough to clear up the marring from SIP, just filled it. You could do 106ff/polishing pad then finishing pad to be sure.

good call, I'd hate to have done the 106ff/finishing pad then realize I didnt clear up what the SIP left behind.

It seems like there is just sooo much filler in Menzerna products. The only reason I have used them was good results, but those results might be just the fillers.

Is there any combo anyone else out there likes better than the Menzerna stuff that doesnt fill as much? 105/205? what else do you all prefer?

Are you sure you are working your polish enough but not overworking? Depending on the paint it may be suseptible to hologram because of softness which means you have to work but not overwork your products

Exactly which pads are you using? I think Dan has a point as that one pic looks like it still has some cob-web scratching in the paint.

if anything I am underworking the product because I know the GM paint is a little soft.

I got rid of my SIP/106ff a long time ago and migrated to 105, 205, final polish II, etc.. I still use some of the menz products (IP, FPII, Power Finish); just not sip/106/8rd, since they usually made me do more work to achieve the same results. Yes, they can be great products when used correctly, I just found they filled so much I was constantly going over the car with isa/water to make sure I'd corrected and not filled.

Well in the sun pictures the paint looks really good. But in the pictures with the flash I can see a lot of swirls still there. While it might of been a good improvement, the paint needs something more abrasive. Like Picus, I too think SIP fills a ton. Id say it fills more than it corrects, same with 106ff. I would go over it with M105 and a light cutting or polishing pad, then do a wipe down and see how things look. M105 finishes down pretty well with the right technique. Getting that method down is the key.

Oh and something you might want to try. Move the buffer in a different direction than your previous step. So on the hood if you went from front to back with SIP, go from side to side with 106. That might tell you whats leaving the holograms.
