Very dirty rad overflow bottle

Somebody on another forum has posted a question about how to clean a dirty overflow bottle. I remember trying to do this a few years ago, with no luck at all.

Any suggestions on what kind of products and techniques should be used?

I was able to clean mine on my Cabriolet by taking it out, filling it with a simple green/h2o mixture. I was able to get an old baby bottle brush inside it and scrubbed it. It did not get rid of all of the stains and did not help the discoloration of the plastic. I rinsed it extreamly well (about 30 times) and hooked it back up. Seems one of the things that prevenitive maintance would have been a good idea on. Previous owner seemed to never change coolent.

Cascade dishwasher soap removed some bad tea stains from insulated cups. Would it be a possibility for the coolant bottle stains?

Here's two suggestions:

Vinegar and baking soda solution. Careful, this will foam substantially. Scrub, RINSE!

Lime Away or equivalent diluted with about 3 parts water. Scrub and RINSE!

I know I'm shouting, but be sure to thoroughly RINSE! :o

I agree with CharlesW, Cascade was the first thing I thought of. There's also a new dishwashing product, Cascade Plastic Booster, that would be worth a try. I've got a coffe cup that gets stains on the inside that no amount of scrubbing will remove. I can't wash it in the dishwasher because of the artwork on the outside, so I put in a teaspoon of Cascade and fill it with water. After an hour or so the stains are gone.

In my experience what's required is mechanical action; notice that many of the wise ones above suggested 'Chemical x, scrub.'

It's the scrub that's the key bit- MiataPaul, a bottle brush? That's excellent, and exactly what I'm going to do come spring!
