I have the Flex 3401 and use the OEM backing plate with the 6.5" Surbufs without any compatibility issues. I have not used Optimum/Meguiar's MF pads so I cannot compare them to the Surbufs but they definitely cut faster than traditional foam pads. It may be my technique (or lack there of) but I can never finish down to "LSP-ready" paint when I use the Surbuf - I have to follow that up with a foam pad to remove the subsequent hazing left from using Surbufs.

I dont know anyone who can get surbuf to finish down properly. It ALWAYS has to have a middle step

Try some Lake Country Purple Wool Pads. Those cut DEEP! Just used one on our black sapphire M6 on the rear bumper, and needless to say, all the deep imperfections are gone!

Very nice, looks like the owner must have had Nu-Finish on the car and they tested in by running through a car wash 100 times to test the beading, given how much the paint was swirled (sorry, showing my age for the old Nu Finish commercials)

Great work on the detail.
