vertical polishing with rotory?

for doing the sides of a vehicle, i use a rollor chair. that way you are more level with the area you are working on and able to keep the pad flat without hurting your back by bending over.

I tape off sensitive trimmings. I also put the polish on by finger on doors, smearing it a little. This helps me reduce sling, dust in trimmings and dets a nice layer of polish across the panel.

i tend to have the machine jump like crazy. ive been sticking my hand under the center front handle of my makita and holding it by the head and its made it easier to control, but other than that, it jumps and slides everywhere. so far i can only a a swirl free finsih on flat horizontal surfaces. really tires of having to unplug the makita and use the PC on side surfaces.

Coupla things.
Tone down the RPM. Start at 1000 (level 1), and only go as high as 1800 (3-4) on side panels, and then after you've created a nice even smear.
Clean your foam pad after every panel.
It sounds like your pad is getting wet. Unless you are using a compound, don't wet the pad or panel. Also make sure your vehicle is dried completely, so start with the horizontal panels.

sound ok?

I just sit or kneel down where I am polishing and try to stay center with the polisher. Try different ways of holding it. Make sure your pad is clean.

You got some good advice already. Like they said make sure your pad is clean and dry, and lower the rpm's. Don't apply to much pressure either, keep the pad flat on the surface and let it do its thing. You'll get it, Practice makes Perfect.

like the guys said keep the rpm down and pad clean .. you can tilt the pad on its edge a little more if needed just keep the speed down and break out the pc if needed its great to have around

I do similarly; though I've been using the PC to spread the product, and then using the rotary to work it in....

What I would suggest if you feel comfortable is to remove the side handle of the rotary and place your hand on the top of the machine. This might give you more control. The I would put the polish/compound on the pad, and sponge it on the side of the car before running the machine to spread it around, then runi the machine. Theses tips might help.
