Velocity Red 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5

Back in July I decided to trade in my blue 2003 Mazda Miata for a red 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata. I got a great deal on it, but it had been sitting on the lot for a few months, and had accumulated a few swirls. Here are a couple BEFORE pics.

Her name is Maggie Mae.

Isn't the little intercooler cute?

I love the metallic red paint, and I figured it would look even more stunning without the swirls, but I thought I would wait until winter before detailing it. However, after I took it on a long trip, where it narrowly missed getting some big scratches and chips, I decided it deserved a little TLC.

Here was my process:

Mr Clean Auto Wash

Clay Magic clay

Poorboy's SSR 2.5 with an orange Propel pad (I started with SSR 2.5 and a green Propel pad, but it wasn't cutting it)

SG x 2

Poorboy's Natty's

There were still a few swirls left after the SSR 2.5, but I was anxious to drive the car, so I decided to leave them until next time. After all, I'm still a novice.

I was also going to try Poorboy's EX-P after the SSR, but I decided to stick with what I was familiar with, so I went with the SG.

Lastly, I finished with Natty's, but next time I think I'll go back to Pinnacle Signature or Souveran. I thought Natty's was difficult to apply compared to Pinnacle.

Here are the AFTER pics.

I love that paint.

Forgive the rims. I decided to save them until next time too.

You can see that there are still a few swirls.

I'll gladly take any suggestions/recommendations.

That's a HOT little Mazda. Looks like your process did a pretty nice job. How's it drive?

Thanks. It handles like its on rails, just like my previous Miata. But the turbo gives it a little extra kick in the pants.

Looks really good! I really like that metallic red Mazda is using. :)

That is the most adorable little intercooler.

Are those wheels OEM?

Yes. All Mazdaspeed Miatas come with Racing Hart wheels.

I was really impressed with all of the extras that come with the Mazdaspeed for only a couple thousand more than a regular Miata.

Nice car and nice work. I have seen a couple of those in the last few days. Mazdas are underated in my opinion, always have been. They offer some really good bang for your bucks. I have a 15 year old Mazda 626 turbo. 227,000 miles and still is pretty quick.

Oh man.

That is an awesome car! You DON'T need to spend $50K+ to get a car that is an absolute blast to drive. I've driven a base model M/T MX5, and that was fun as hell. I can't even imagine what the Mazdaspeed version must be like.

... they don't call it "Velocity Red" for nothin...

While I usually avoid red cars (b/c of fading potential), I'd definitely consider a Velcoty Red MazdaSpeed Miata!

MS miatas are truly fantastic cars - pretty much the entire mazdaspeed line is under appreciated. I'm sure they make them in limited numbers and in a few years these will be really hard to find! Before I got my HFP civic si I tried to pick up an '03 mazdaspeed protege...unfortunately, burnt orange was the only color I could find without a load of miles.

You've got yourself a rare killer performance bargain, enjoy it! I'm betting it responds really well to mods also...

Lol that's exactly what I was thinking, at first glance I thought it was his license plate hahaha :D I'm not very knowledgeable about Miata's...excuse me, MX-5's, but do they get any significant boost in hp if you got a bigger intercooler?

Great detail by the way :xyxthumbs

I have heard conflicting opinions on the effectiveness of a bigger intercooler. Some same the OEM intercooler is just fine. But I imagine it depends on the situation.

BTW, sometimes even I can't make up my mind whether to call it an MX-5 or a Miata. I wish Mazda would choose one or the other.

Apparently the three previous generations are Miatas, but the newest generation is the MX-5 officially.

Raising an old thread, but wanted to comment on the quality of Flyin' Miata parts: top notch! They're not the cheapest aftermarket parts, but they really do their own internal R&D, and put out fabulous products.

I'll wait to post pictures of my Miata until after I do a spring detail, but thanks to FM parts it's gone from <90 RWHP to over 260 RWHP with a bone-stock engine.
