Velcro backing pads

I just started having a problem with my backing pad (P/C from Coastal Tool). I used to be able to 'spin dry' my pads after washing thjem, and now there isn't enough "grip" in the velcro to hold a pad on, even at "1."

I started noticing it a few weeks ago when I was polishing my car and the pads kept coming loose. I tried nearly evey pad I had tonigh, and none of them stuck for more than a few seconds...you can even feel the loss of grip just putting them on and taking them off again.

I have a hard time believing ALL my pads went bad at the same time, so it must be the backing pad. Has anyone else had a backing pad 'fail' like this before??
 
I have heard problems with the CT backing plate. Its a great deal from CT, but the backing plate isn't good after a few washes on your pad. The best way is to order a better quality plate from CMA PAC etc. I can dig up the thread if you want backing the claim.

Interesting.
The last time I used my Meg's Velcro backing plate I didn't think the pads seemed to be sticking like they used to.
It is about 20 months old and has been used quite a few times, but nothing like the use that it would get from a professional.
Maybe it's time to try someone elses backing plate and see if it does any better.

Don, why not let your pads just air dry by sitting. Unless you need the pads dry fast, I dont understand why you would "spin" dry them. Also the issue with the CT backplate, that link is for one occurance. I am sure if there were more problems there would be more posts showing up on Autopia and DC. I know if my backplate starts to fail, i'll prob just get 1 from CMA.
 
My BP from CT has more bite than I would like, if you're not careful it will tear the velcro form the pad.

My meguiars BP doesn't have near the bite of the CT, but I have never had issues with pads coming off.
 
The CMA plates are labeled "Auto Quip" correct? Lake Country themselves in addition to Megs also makes plates, PakShak sells LC plates. I got a flexi one for my rotary from him
 
I air dry my pads and have had the Meguiars backing plates do the same thing (lose their grip)
It seems to happen after I have used the PC at max speed for a while.
Meguiars did replace the first one that went bad and now the second one has done the same thing.
I will have to get off my butt and give them a call. They have excellent customer service, but I hate the hassle of calling ...etc.
I might buy an Edge velcro backing plate next time.

YES YES YES!
I am on my 4th backplate in 6 months. 2 black PC ones and 2 LC yellow ones from Nick at DP.
All start of with great hold, then after 10 hours use at speed 6, the pad is floping around and falling off the plate. (LC 7.5" pad). Even with a new pad the plate does not hold all that good.

I was starting to feel like I was the only one with these issues. That's why I'm hoping the edge 2k pads will eventually work out for me.
 
I've had a Buff and Shine Center Tee velcro backing plate for at least 8 years now, and their Flexible 7" Grip Backingplate even longer and never had a problem with either one... I have had problems with the velcro that's attached to Meg's pads seperating from the foam though, but never with the velcro slipping. IMO, Buff and Shine, hands down, makes the best pads.*

Buff and Shine make the best pads or *plates*? I have a pad and I think Lake Country is much better
 
I had one go bad after a year and the one I got now is still holding very strong. I got it from properautocare.com
 
Ah ok, my plate for the PC I got from CT is still sitting in the box never used, I think it is PC brand

Two problems with that.
1. The system is new enough that it may have some bugs in it.
2. What do I do with the 7 Velcro pads (all in excellent condtion) that I now own?

Yeah I must have about 21 pads or so now, my plates are good so I wont be switching for a long long time.
