Using gas

I have never used it to remove tar nor would I but a friend let someone do it. What kind of damage would it cause

Modern automotive paint is extremely gasoline resistant. GAS IS NOT A SAFE CLEANER HOWEVER! There are many things out there that are much more effective, try Goo Gone gel or Tarminator, hell, even mineral spirits or kerosene would be safer and more effective than gas.

Desiel fuel used to be the solvant of choice for road tar. A simple wipe and it pretty much wiped right off like butter. But yea it's not smart and there's a thousand and 1 reasons why you shouldn't use that.

I use tarminator myself. Works great. Gasoline has to be hard on the clearcoat. I told them I dont think one time would ruin the finish but not a good choice. Thanks

Gasoline is effective for removing tar. However, its negative effects(vapors, flamability,et al) far outweigh the benefits. As others have stated, Tarminator and similiar products work well without the potential dangers of handling gas.
