4 ways to put your smartphone to use:

1. Photos.

Ever had a customer call with the job that was “borderline”? it’s too risky to throw out a quote over the phone, so you quote a wide range on the job. The customer says he’ll think about it. But you never hear from him again. Now, if the customer can take a quick photo with her cell phone and text it to you immediately, you can throw out a very specific number with some confidence. Also, we have all driven many miles to a job that just wasn’t fixable as a re-conditioner. A quick photo via text can keep you out of a frustrating trip like this. And don't forget that it's easier than ever to build up a collection of before and after photos for your website or portfolio.

2. Videos.

The video capability of most smart phones is now good enough for YouTube. This is a huge promotional opportunity. You only need a helper, a friend, or a coworker to do a brief video of you detailing a car. What you do next is upload the video to YouTube and label it with something like “Tucson Auto Detailing.” Often, Google will place these videos on the first page of Google much faster than your webpage. You can get a ton of free publicity for just 30 minutes of work.

3. Appointment setting.

Some days get pretty busy in the car business. There isn’t a technician out there who has been around for more than five years who hasn’t completely forgotten about an appointment. It’s a huge embarrassment and a bruise on her reputation. If you can structure your whole day on your cell phone, and add alerts as each appointment comes up ( have your phone vibrate 20 minutes before the next appointment) this simply won’t happen again. And applications like Google calendar have some really powerful features that allow you to send out automatic e-mails to your customers a day prior to your appointment. Because it’s not just you that forgets appointments, it’s your customers too.

4. Accept credit cards.

This costs about 3% per transaction. No fees initially. No monthly fees. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than taking checks, and if you have a trusted account, certainly continue taking checks. But for customers who insist on plastic, and for new customers, processing cards with your phone is a revenue generator and time saver. Try squareup.com.

Voted yes, but not to the full potential.

It's not convenient doing certain things by phone, like a lot of typing, so invoices are out of the question. Reading emails, setting appointments, picture messaging updates to clients, and things along those lines are done all the time. Having a smart phone has made some things much easier to do. I suppose with a portable plug in / blue-tooth keyboard of some type I could do even more.

I can't imagine doing a quote by a phone picture. I can't see the real condition of the paint in some of the cell pics in the C&B section from "detailers", let alone from the average person.

:werd: Unless we're talking about pics in direct sun taken with an iPhone 4S, no way would I trust them.

I do everything except for invoicing and plastic transactions. Most of my customers are young and have the latest gadgets. They can schedule an appointment on my website with the service if it's basic (Wash and Wax and Decon), they can schedule a consultation for paint corrections. I have rules on my availability (Lunch breaks) what combinations of services they can do(2 decons a day, 5 wash and wax etc..) and add-on's if they wish (Head light restoration with any service, permanent wheel protection with a decon package etc). I can also set it to send them a e-mail automatically or text message ( but costs like 5-10 cents per notification), booking fees, cancellation fees, no-show fees. I also update my website, so clients can see what I am working on and where.

Future Plans

-Database on for customers to choose which car you have with year, model, make, colour for basic services and instant quotes

-A discount available for people who are within 5 KM of my working locations if I have the time

-Make my website mobile friendly

-Iphone App for either my business or detailers in general (Thank god I took programming)

I just want to make it really easy, fun and functional to get your car detailed

I've also got some other tricks up my sleeves like creative QR codes (running a successful QR campaign) and such but I'll save that for when I am successful.

This post has got me thinking, since I am in Canada I cannot order square up. There is Kudos Payment and Payfirma but I found a good solution also. I am making a PayPal pay account on my website, after I finish the detail I can log on the website for the customer and they can input there Credit Card info or I can invoice them for a service. They can also pay by their phone if they wish.

Voted yes, but I can't accept credit cards over my mobile device. Square really needs to think about heading north of the border.

Intuit GoPayment should be available to you in Canada; might be a viable alternative....

Absolutely I use my Mac, iPad and 2 iPhones working together to run the business. Imessenger between my phone and the phone at the shop is incredible and we text/e-mail with a lot of our customers. We do all our scheduling via google calendar which is synced to all mobile devices and our main computer - works awesome. I'm hoping Quickbooks gets their act together and releases an app for iPhone/ipad that I can use with my accounting software and I "might" have a buddy that can design an app we can use in iOS just for my shop as well.

We do the exact same thing. There is an app from quickbooks to link to your main computer network. It's $25 I believe, and you can write invoices on your iPad, or iPhone.

Quickbooks Canada does not support the stuff that goes with the US version. As usual we get the big screw job up here

Great to see strong smartphone use here. I had a windows phone in 2007 (HTC Titan) and was convinced that the smartphone would forever change small business.
