Ultima & UDM Autopia Extravaganza -- San Diego, CA

Well, I thought I was going to be able to make this, but I have to work tomorrow, so count me out. Sorry for the late notice.

Just got back and it was a great event today. Thanks to David B for being such a gracious host and for feeding us bagels and pizza ;) Thanks also to Lynn and David for taking our orders and walking us through the warehouse; great community service BTW, working with ARC. It was also great meeting a few of my fellow Autopia members, some of which walked away with great deals on UDM's and Ultima products. I personally picked up some Tire & Trim Guard Plus, which also protects wheels so I will be using this instead of wax from now on. I had some Ultima Paint Guard Plus applied to the rear end of my car and it is already feeling slickery and from what I understand that should improve even more tomorrow. Great products David and thanks again for allowing us to be a part of the product launch here in San Diego.

Thanks for attending. I had a great time and really enjoyed showing the new product. I'm finally home, beer in hand, feet up and can finally relax a little. Getting to the finish line with two new product lines at the same time was a huge load, but all worth it when you hear the "WOWs!".

BTW, your Lexus is BEAUTIFUL!!!

OK guys, how about some pic's of the event? (when you can)

I was too busy checking out the great products to take pics but I heard someone's camera going off so I'm sure we'll see pics soon.

It was a great experience and I thank David and David and Lynn for a cool event, for the food, and David for the raffle at the end. Having my first machine experience with the UDM was an honor. It was also nice meeting a few of the Autopians. SDLexus (sorry I forgot your name) again you have a sweet car :D.

The tire/trim guard looks really promising. I would have gotten some but I am in a pinch.

Got back around 8:15pm, and I'm pretty tired so I'll only post a short review now.

I got to the meet a little late(12:15pm) but caught the red Porsche being worked on, looked good. I'm told it looked much better than it did originally.

Saw the Tire and Trim Protectant being applied to tires and trim, also very nice. Layering it on the tires made it glossier.

The Paint Prep didn't seem to remove a majority of the swirls, but it's supposed to make the Paint Guard adhere better.

One of the Autopians there commented that the Elastrofoam marred his paint where he had orange peel, but I hadn't seen what it looked like before so I can't say anything else about that.

Lunch was great, thanks David!(And Lynn too)

I missed the Porsche being dressed with the Paint Guard as I was taking a walking tour through the warehouse with the other David of Autopia. Great guy, told us about the ARC program and everything.

I got out in time to see the Porsche after it was dressed, looked good in the sun.

Then the Pontiac got polished and protected, looked great, the flake really came out.

Saw the UDM in action the entire day almost.

-Didn't seem to bog down at all

-Users commented it vibrated a lot, I remember hearing something to the extent of "Boy your hands would be numb after doing the whole car"

-Looked really nice, I think 90% of the people who attended left with one or some other large percentage

I was lucky enough to win the raffle at the end(drawing sticks):woot2: and got a nice bottle of the Paint Guard Plus, though I had already purchased a bottle earlier in the day, now I guess I just have more cars to do;)

I purchased the following:

-Ultima Paint Prep Plus

-Ultima Paint Guard Plus

-Ultima Tire and Trim Protectant

-Autoglym Glass Polish

-Sonus FX1

The Paint Guard Plus came with a nice microfiber applicator. I am only worried that it will absorb too much product and be wasteful, though I plan on designating it as the Paint Guard Plus applicator and storing it in a sandwich bag. At $70 a bottle I don't want to waste a drop:D It does go on very thinly, wipe on and walk away, very nice feature.

It seemed like a lot of Paint Prep Plus was being used per panel, but to be fair the panels had a lot of scratches/swirls, and I don't think the Paint Prep Plus is marketed as a swirl remover. That's why it's called a 'Prep.' Also why I bought the SFX1, so I can get the deep stuff first.

I'll try to answer any and all questions honestly if you post them.

It was a great day, thanks David B. and the Autopian team, as well as my fellow Autopians who turned out!! Well worth the 280 mile drive. Hey if I didn't love my car I wouldn't be on this forum right?:D

As a parting word I will say that in my opinion I think that all the Ultima products were worth their cost. They're very potent and a little goes a long way. The Tire and Trim Protectant was awesome! The advanced power of the UDM would seem to cancel out any negative vibration aspect of the machine. Someone pointed out that at Home Depot you can buy thick gloves with pads in them that would cut the vibration in your palms/fingers.

Again, many thanks and I look forward to meets in the future. Thanks for answering all the questions I had David(s.) I know it must have been hectic/stressful to schedule the meet in the midst of releasing the Ultima and also The Ultimate Detail Machine Line, and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated it and how much I learned:2thumbs: I'm off to play with my new products!:woot2: And then looking forward to a comftorable bed and good nights sleep:)

Edit** BTW I am officially broke now:laugh::laugh: Definitely worth it though!!

Wow you drove far! Man congrats on the stick drawing, I wish I won but that's ok hahah.

The event was great, and there was free food, which is still a give away and I really appreciated that :).

Thanks. No worries I have forgotten everyone's REAL name besides David (both) and Lynn. The only screen names I remember are yours and Bababooey ;)

I'll add in a bit. I was distracted by the food and the tour and the prospect of getting my UDM that day but I saw the wash and dry of the Porsche and the Paint Prep.

As David did the wheels and tires, I was expecting the suds not to die down as that's one of the primary aims of the stuff but I was amazed that the suds were simply unaffected by the wheel and tire wash. It's different when you see it in person.

The Paint Prep underwhelmed me with its ability to remove swirls. However, the paint looked noticeably brighter and glossier where David went over the paint the first time. Then the challenge was made and David responded, "wanna see how aggressive I can get?" and then the panel he was doing positively glowed.

Some swirling was still visible in direct sunlight though, despite immense pressure and the stiffest pad there.

Which brings me to the UDM. I don't have any experience with the PC so I can't comment on comparability but it did seem like David was putting on a huge amount of pressure. The machine's noise reduced a bit but even muffled sounded like it was it was ready and able. I don't have any experience machine polishing so take that as you will.

I didn't really talk to many of the others and I didn't ask for names or screen names. So if you have no idea who I am, don't worry about it. Not to mention I'm a very forgettable Asian guy.

Thanks for the feedback, Kevin. It was nice to meet you yesterday.

Yes, indeed, I was applying a lot of pressure to the pad. We never designed the Ultima Paint Prep Plus to be a defect removal polish, so I was pushing it to its limit on Bob's 911. If I'd taken a 3rd pass, I believe all of the swirls would have been gone. Hopefully Bob will get back to us after he tries out his UDM.

One of the things I was trying to demonstrate was the importance of the polishing pad itself. My new DAS ScratchBuster (white) and DAS SwirlBuster (orange) pads really work polishes hard. When you run the UDM at speed 4 and apply enough downforce to compress the pad 75%, the UDM/DAS pad combo produce the same friction work as a rotary at 750-800 RPM.

I think the blue Trans Am was a very good example of before and after with a single pass of the UDM and Ultima Paint Prep Plus. The difference was simply amazing. I wish we'd gotten before and after pics.
