UK Question

I want to buy or make a US 2-pin extension cable to go from the PC to the transformer. Anyone know where to buy one from? Or where to get the correct plugs/sockets and cable?

I had a look through several electrical catalogues at work for the same plugs/sockets. I found plugs are no problem, but you need to order 5 at a time. The sockets are a different matter. The cheapest ones are not safe for the end of an extension lead, they are designed to be fitted into a wall/unit. The ones you could use on an extension are VERY expensive. Take a look http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/browse/...D=ukie&3253014935=3253014935&catoid=-75925651 .

I will ask our resident sparky at work if he know's any more, but I won't see him until Monday 9th.

EDIT.....RTE60, I can't see US type extensions on those sites :nixweiss

Sorry Pugoman , crossed wire, I thought it was the plugs/sockets that are used on UK sites for 110V which you were looking for.

ok, now I am confused, are we searching for USA style sockets or the industrial 110v sockets. If it is the USA socket, what will it be attached to and using what method to reduce the voltage.

hope this makes sense

To the best of my knowledge, pugoman is wanting an extension lead with US plug and socket on either end. Transformer (with US sockets) plugged into house/garage......PC outside with car........extension cable joining them up.

Tony, you couldn't be more correct! :)

My power point is in the garage and I want to keep the transformer inside whilst I work outside. As some of you are probably aware, British house building companies don't build garages that you can actually get your car into! So I will have to work outside with the PC.

From the information I've gathered, the plugs/sockets on the extension need to be of the Polarized variety. ie one pin wider than the other like the original PC plug. I can get the normal 2-pin plugs/sockets where both pins are the same width, but I think these are for general USA mains usage. ie for tv's, vcr's etc. Not suitable for the PC.

BTW, I'm going to get the 1000kva Newmarket transformer like AndyC has.

Ah the great :brit garage.....I got one like that too, I can just get the car in, open the door and slide out.

I've also emailed Autopia Sales to see if they can supply one. Worth a try I thought!

Good idea that man, I'd be interested too :)

The good old British garage......Big enough to get a car in easily.....Just a shame I can't acually drive a car down the whole length of the driveway to get to it!!!!! Genius.....

:D

The Newmarket transformer is in a bit of a Heath Robinson box but it works OK. Why do you want to keep the tranny in the garage, it would be much easier (& cheaper) to run it from an extension. I know you are supposed to extend the other way, but I've been using mine for 6 months now with no probs.

I take your point, it will be easier. In fact they look so darn cheap, if you can get one sent over from the US, make it 2 & I'll have one as well.

I'll keep on the look out as well

Nice one vindaloo - I'll do that!

If I find somewhere, I'll let everyone know hear, 'coz I'm sure some more of us would be interested too. I'll do a bit of a group buy thing. :)

Coastal Tool sell them & ship to the UK, but they only use UPS. I have just 'trial' bought one on their site & it's $50 for delivery, ouch!

Maybe a kind US Autopian could buy us a couple from Amazon & ship them the to us via USPS. In fact because of weight, I bet you if they are shipped separately the shipping is probably cheaper.

Any kind people out there? :D
