UDM just died - Do I get the Porter Cable XP or Megs new machine?

I don't think their original DA was that great, but this new one is the best DA I've ever used. I'd highly recommend it.

I was in a quandary whether to get a Flex or a GG polisher. I opted for the Flex (good sale) and am glad I did after seeing how many are failing on AGO's forums.

I never questioned myself one bit when I got my Flex. The GG is a good DA but not good enough to keep sending it in for replacements.
 
anything man made is prone to being defective and some G110v2's, GG6 and PC7424XP's all have had some problems. some more than others yes, but it could happen to any one of them...

Be careful of what you say, the last person that bragged about how well his GG works had to have it replaced already.
 
Well this is a good thread since I'm considering buying my first DA. For me the price excludes the Flex so I'm torn between the Mequiar's G110 V2 or the Griot's Garage DA.
 
I bought the original PC, worked it hard and it died - but I had a repair center close by and after 2 weeks (ARGGGGGH) I got it back, it ran BETTER than before. Then later on I got a new PCXP and it's a little more powerful, but I don't like the rounded style, it makes it hard to just sit it down with a pad on it. It rolls over on the side you see. If $ wasn't an issue - I would try that Makita BO 6040.
 
What about the 10" Random Orbit Waxer/Polisher from Harbor Freight? Only $20! Can anyone give an honest assessment of this product without just bashing HF in general. I only have 2 vehicles and wouldn't be using the polisher more than 4 times a year. I just want to polish once and seal on both vehicles.

Those orbitals are probably fine to apply sealants, waxes, glazes, AIO's, and cleaners (assuming the pads you can buy for it are meant for that) but generally these orbitals don't have near the power to actually correct any paint any better than trying to polish by hand.

I'll just stick to hand polishing and waxing. I really didn't want to send another 20 USD to China, anyway.

Went through 3 of the original G110s before my current one, which has worked great for a year now. At least there is a Meguiars distributor in the Dallas area so exchanging them was easy.

Just FYI, I detailed cars professionally by hand for 10 years before I started using buffers, starting with the original PC7424 (which is obviously a lot more powerful than a 10" orbital) and there is no comparison to hand polishing vs machine. You can polish the paint much deeper and more evenly than you can by hand, especially with the newer, harder paints cars have today.

Heh heh, you mean starting with a Cyclo, don't ya ;)
 
Please tell me you are kidding or are new to this. DAs are perfectly capable of doing a hell of a lot of correction. My first PC lasted 5 years with heavy use. The UDMs I have are horrid. Been replaced 3 times but one of them was because of that stupid original switch.

-Longhorn- I'm pretty sure that Bert was referring to those big 10" ROs, not the kind of polishers we generally talk about.
