UDM Died - Vent

I think you missed this bolded detail from my first post. I honestly have no idea how many hours my machine has run.



I sent an email to the UDM site this morning asking for the price of new brushes. Hopefully I'll get this thing back up and running good as new.
 
Check the bearings for any slack if the armature is flopping around it will do a number on the brushes. Check the end play of the armature by assembling it in the housing and pull and push on it. There should be hardly any end play if there is shimming will be necessary. Cleaning the commutator you could spin the armature in the housing and stick a cotton swap down the brush holder with some heavy car polish and spin the armature with a drill at slow speed. Clean off any polish residue with electric motor cleaner, Brake cleaner is the same thing check label. Truing the commutator before installing the new brushes is ideal this can be done on a lathe. finally check and make sure the brushes move freely in brush holders might have burrs along the edge of the holder hanging them up, remove any burrs. After installing new brushes run with no load on the motor for a few minutes.

I just put in a request to have the warehouse send you new brushes on Monday.

My UDM made it nearly two years with regular professional use, including a few 6-8 hour polishing marathons. For a polisher that is more geared to the enthusiast than the professional, I got more than my money's worth.

Wow! If mine lasts half that many run-hours, it will likely last me 10 or more years since I just do my own vehicles.

PS: Can't wait to get my new brushes. I want to do a Megs 205, 1Z Proline Metallic polish, Collinite 476s job on my silver Olds!
 
FINALLY got a change to install the new brushes yesterday, and it runs like a charm again. Didn't put it to work yet, just let it idle on speed 2 for a few minutes, but hopefully it's good to go.



The brushes are pretty easy to replace, so thank you for the encouragement to fix my UDM as opposed to replacing it!
 
Is there anywhere we can take our UDM's for "surgery"? I have at least one dead. It would make me very happy to see it come back to life though.

We don't due surgery but for UDM warranty issues and out of warranty issues please go to this UDM Warranty Link and fill out the information. If you are needing parts, just state that in the information about what is wrong.



We will take care of any warranty replacements as soon as your email comes in and for out of warranty issues, we will let you know what your options are as soon as possible.

Thanks Lynn. My problem is I have no clue what is wrong with the machine and I have no mechanical skill that would make me figure out why the machine is not working properly. And, I've exhausted my warranty twice. Hence why I ask for a doctor :)
 
If you explain how it died, someone here may be able to help you diagnose it.



They are a simple machine to work on. For instance, all of 5 screws need to be removed to change brushes. Only 1 screw needs to be removed to gain access to the speed dial and the on/off switch. From what I've read, those parts cover a large percentage of repairs.



Machines don't get much simpler.
